Okay, what that is is that they've factored the square root of 48. Because the square root of 48 isn't a whole number, this is what they've done:

48 = 16 x 3

therefore sqrt48 = sqrt16 x sqrt3

the root of 16 is 4, so that means:

sqrt 48 = 4 x sqrt3

Oops, just reread your thing, and I missed the negative part. Hmm. You're right, the answer needs a negative in there somewhere. I should know this stuff, now I'm feeling stupid.... :P

Because you forgot that when a negative number is squared it becomes positive. All squares are positive. So it works out the same way. Negative is negligible.
