No Answer Necessary

“Why, why, why do I always end up working in Vancouver?!”
Jared opened his mouth to answer but then thought better of it. Clearly this was rhetorical. He figured he’d go for diversion instead.

“One more week and we break.”

Jensen merely glared. “Yeah. And this damn storm couldn’t have waited one more week?”

Hmm, another rhetorical question. You know, he didn’t really like those. Made for one-sided conversations. “Jensen, it’s not so bad.”

So of course, that’s when Jensen’s cell phone went off.

“Clif? When are they--No no no, fuck, no.” Jensen was livid. “Fine. Yeah. We got blankets, yeah. Nah, I guess. As soon as you can, okay? Right. Bye.” He turned back to Jared. “Can this fucking day get any worse?!”

Jared gave up answering and stayed silent. True, this had been a not-so-stellar day so far. There was the snow storm. Okay. Maybe it was a full-fledged blizzard by now. And the car had stalled and they’d had to pull over and now were becoming part of a rather impressive snow drift. Jared glared at the all-white view out the window.

But they had their phones and it’s not like this was Siberia and Clif was sending someone to tow them out. Except, clearly something had …

“The road isn’t passable. Nobody’s coming. Well, not in the immediate future at any rate.”

Jensen’s low pronouncement pierced Jared’s thoughts. “Wh … at?” he stuttered. He had counted on this adventure having a quick expiration date. “What do you mean? They're on the way, right?!“

“Nope. There’s no way.”

Now, Jensen knew everything there was to know about his costar given how long they’d worked together. Except, Jared may have left out one tiny phobia. “Oh fuck.”

“Jay?”

“This can’t … we gotta get out of here. I mean, I thought maybe an hour and I can deal, you know. But … I can’t … can’t … “

“Jared, what’s wrong? I mean aside from the obvious. You okay, dude?”

Jared’s eyes returned to the all-white view. The closed, tight, suffocating no way out and we’re all gonna die of asphyxiation before anyone can even miss us view. He started pushing at the door handle.

Jensen pounced on him. “What are you doing? Jared?!”

“Can’t stay here. Gotta get out. Jen, help me get out … please. We’re gonna die in here. Not enough air.”

Jensen’s gloved hand touched Jared’s back. “Jared. There’s plenty of air. C’mon man. Don’t tell me you have claustrophobia.”

“Okay.”

“Okay what?”

“Okay I won’t tell you.” Jared tried to control his runaway fear. It was irrational and he knew it. But his heart was beating Thumper fast and his breath, what there was of it, was thin and raspy. But that’s because the air was running out and the snow was covering them up more each second until soon they would be invisible and years would pass until one day only their bleached bones would be found.

“It’s like Lost.”

Jensen’s eyes were wide and staring. “We’re not lost, Jared. Clif knows where we are. I told him. I was just bitching. I’m sure they’ll come soon.”

“No,” Jared corrected. “Like on the first season of Lost when they found those skeletons in the cave. That’ll be us. People will wonder who we were.”

Jensen stared at him oddly. “You never watched Lost.”

“No. But I read about it online.”

Jared was shaking now but not from the cold. He could see the shift in Jensen’s eyes as he came closer. “C’mere, you nut job.” Strong arms held him close. Jared didn’t resist, just melted in and silently shook. He didn’t want to wig out, especially when Jensen was also upset. He liked to be the steady one. And usually he was. Only the white outside was hazing into a blank gray, like a void, like a coffin … He struggled against the grip holding him and went for the door again. He’d rather chance the blizzard.

“Jared. Please. C’mon. You’re gonna hurt one of us. Calm down. I’m here. Nothing is gonna happen. I promise.”

Now, Jensen wasn’t touchy-feely. Sure, in bed, he was wildfire. A most pleasant, although not wholly unexpected surprise. But he liked his personal space. Jared invaded that boundary at times. As the years passed he learned to ease off more and let Jensen be. It worked out best that way. Because when Jensen felt like touching … well, he didn’t hold back.

A solid warmth traveled up and down his back. Jensen’s hot breath spoke into his ear. “Tell me what you need.”

“To get out,” Jared answered honestly, eyes too wet and too wide.

“I can’t give you that. Yet. Until then. What will make you feel better? Safer?”

It was a bit counterintuitive since it was the pressed-in feeling that was making Jared feel like a caged cat. Except. He knew what would sooth. “You. Could you … ? How about a hug.”

Jensen smiled extra white in the snow’s reflective glow. “That I can handle. C’mere, ya big baby.”

Jared snuggled closer and wrapped his huge arms around his partner. They were swathed in thick coats and scarves and gloves. But he still felt bone-deep warmth when Jensen’s arms drew back around him and pulled him in tight. Jared practiced his breathing. In. Out. Slow and steady against the stubble of Jensen’s cheek. The shivering was easing and the knot in his belly slowly uncoiling. Maybe he’d be able to wait it out.

“I know you didn’t want an answer.”

Jensen pulled back slightly to see Jared’s eyes but didn’t lighten his grip. “Answer to what, Jay?”

“Your rhetorical question about Vancouver. But … I’m glad you work here.”

He pressed onto Jensen’s shoulder again as warmth spread over his back from Jensen’s persistent rubbing. “Me, too.”

Jared felt a stab of surprise. Not that Jensen was as glad that they worked together as Jared was. He knew that. But that Jensen was saying he didn’t really mind Vancouver so much. “Even with days like this?” he asked. Jared’s voice was steady again and the mind numbing fear recessed to a manageable level. It was impossible to stay afraid in Jensen’s arms.

He knew the kiss was coming even before their lips met. “Especially because of days like this.”

Jared’s breathing sped up again but this time not out of fear. Pillow soft lips pressed against his in lush perfection. He pushed back, tongue slicking out to grab a little taste. So good.

Jensen’s eyes twinkled, setting off little crystalline glints. “So, is this why you didn’t have to crawl out of your coffin like I did?”

Jared buried his head back into Jensen’s neck, embarrassment flushing his face. “Could be. I told Sera I thought it would be repetitive. Kind of a preemptive strike in case she was thinking of going there. Of course, still don’t know if they’ll write something like that for me one day.”

“Nah.”

“Someone might.”

“Have to go through me first.”

Jared didn’t say anything. Protective Jensen had this heat ray that went straight to Jared’s heart. He knew how that felt. Poor Kim avoided Jared for days when his use of real glass had cut Jensen for real.

“You better?” Jensen asked.

“Yeah. I’m sorry I … “

Those wonderful lips met his again. “Hush. It’s just us here.”

Jared swallowed the sudden ball-sized lump in his throat. “What would I do without you?”

Jensen’s gaze was water color soft. “That a rhetorical question?”

Jared smiled despite himself. “Yeah.”

“Hate those.”
