I'm really starting to enjoy this whole winter thing a little more. The amounts of snow and cold were really a bummer, until I got a job at a school. The community college where I work seems to be really antsy about opening in snow, and we've had a lot of it since I started there. Hence, in the 3 weeks I've been employed, I've taught 4 classes, and had 3 cancelled because of snow. That includes my morning class today, so I got to sleep in unexpectedly. Woo-Hoo! I love snow days.
Today's snow day was particularly amusing because, basically, it rained a little bit, and was freezing rain for about 20 minutes. In fact, today was the warmest day we have had all month! Crazy people. One thing that I've noticed from living in Delaware is that it snows fairly often, but people are not prepared for it anyhow. In Michigan, and even Western PA where I grew up, it snowed way more but we never got snow days because there were plows and people were prepared. In North Carolina, nobody knows what to do with snow, but it come up that often (maybe once a year). Delaware seems to be in the middle: We have gotten about 5 snowstorms this year, and every time people panic. Grocery stores sell out of milk and bread, and Home Depot runs out of shovels. The school were my Mom works has gotten 7 snow days already this year. The governor of Delaware is a particular culprit in the panic, because she declares a State of Emergency at the drop of the hat. There were 4 different states of emergency in 2003, and that's not uncommon. Now, it seems to me that its really unlikely to have 4 valid emergencies every year. It just seems like people should be used to the snow by now, but I certainly don't mind the time off!
