there and back again

I have been back in London for four days now, if you count this past Thursday (which I do, though it passed in a jet-lagged fog). Before that I was in San Diego, doing my best to take almost two years worth of catching up with old friends, spending time with my parents, visiting all my favourite old haunts, driving on the right side of the road, and eating Mexican food and frozen yogurt, and compress it all into ten days. Considering the tallness of that order, I think I did pretty well on everything except fangirl hangouts - Cali fen, rest assured that I will see you next year come hell or high water! Or both! *pinky swear*

Before THAT, I spent two weeks in Vancouver with my parents, my two younger brothers, and my aunt and my grandmother (both over from London as well). It was a truly excellent, relaxing holiday. We had enough time there that we didn't have to rush to accomplish anything, so we just spent a bunch of time hanging out around each other, as a whole family, all in the same place.

It speaks to how well-adjusted we are that nobody committed homicide. Though I will admit, there were several close calls.

The point is, it was really good to see my brothers for that length of time, to hang around with them in what is now their natural habitat, their chosen city, and re-affirm how much I enjoy their company, see first-hand what wonderful people they've grown up to be. I could not be a prouder big sister if I tried.

The toughest part of this trip was realising just how much I miss my parents, and my brothers, and my friends, and San Diego. London is very much my home now, and I love my life here in a way I couldn't have done if I'd stayed in California, but... well. It's always going to be home, even long after I've gone on and found a new home somewhere else, and somewhere else again after that. It's where I came from, where I started being the person I am today, and it still holds a vast quantity of people I love. Leaving that behind, even to get back to the 'real world' and start working up to all the big positive changes I want to make in the next year, is always going to be bittersweet.

Srry fr th navelgazing, everyone. Getting over jetlag always makes me contemplative.

At any rate, I came home to a lonely cat and an empty flat, on account of miznarrator leaving to go off to the wilds of France not 24 hours before my plane touched down. That cow.

First week back at the new job as a permanent, full-time, non-temporary employee (my first such job in England ever!) starts tomorrow morning. I'm looking forward to it and dreading it in equal measure, but more on that after I survive the day. For now, I'm off to listen to the rest of the Star Wars: X-Wing Book 2 - Wedge's Gamble audio book, like the gigantic nerdface I am. Corran Horn, you remain my most favouritest of all the Gary Stu OCs in the whole SW Extended Universe, largely because I'm a little bit in love with your badass smuggler wife-to-be. :D
