They're calling them Familiars. They act as parasites that were supposedly given to us for our own protection.

And they can be anything from anywhere? Do they have a function?

Seems like. Supposedly they need you to survive, so they'll do what they can to keep you alive if you're attacked. But so far all I've seen it do is get in the way.
