If I doled out the Emmys
It's TV awards time down south, and our critic bravely lists his own favourites and likely winners
JIM BAWDEN
TELEVISION COLUMNIST
The Emmy nominations come out tomorrow and I'll bet you can't wait. Me, I always compile my own list of who should get nominated and who will really win. Unlike the L.A. voters, I have no axes to grind save an insatiable appetite for quality TV.
Here's how I'm handicapping the race:
Lead Actor, drama: Gale Harold (Queer as Folk), Hugh Laurie (House), Dennis Franz (NYPD Blue), Ian McShane (Deadwood) and Kiefer Sutherland (24).
The above are the most worthy, but the category could be doubled in size to make room for Anthony LaPaglia, David Caruso, Denis Leary, Matthew Fox and Julian McMahon. Harold will never even get a nomination because of the anti-Toronto bias of Emmy voters. And there'll be a natural tendency to glide over Franz after 12 outstanding seasons. I think the winner will be McShane, who was unjustly neglected last year, but if it were Sutherland, I'd be the last one to complain.
Lead Actor, comedy: Jason Bateman (Arrested Development), Ray Romano (Everybody Loves Raymond), Tony Shalhoub (Monk), Adrian Grenier (Entourage) and Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men).
A pitiful category when contrasted with talent-rich best dramatic actor. With Raymond exiting, what is left? Joey? Pleeease! And Will & Grace is crashing by the episode. I'd go with Bateman, who has risen from obnoxious teen (on Valerie) to quite a neat comic actor. But I have this feeling Romano will snatch it for sentimental reasons.
Lead Actress, comedy: Marcia Cross and Teri Hatcher (Desperate Housewives), Lauren Graham (Gilmore Girls), Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars) and Sara Rue (Less Than Perfect).
It's a battle royale between those two DH gals with Cross likely to take it. But I'd like to see Graham get some recognition and also Bell.
Lead Actress, drama: Tyne Daly (Judging Amy), Jennifer Garner (Alias), Christine Lahti (Jack & Bobby), Evangeline Lilly (Lost), and Glenn Close (The Shield).
Yeah, I know Tyne is usually in support, but in her last season with JA doesn't she deserve the big one? She delivered in all her major scenes and voters love her. The very best work came from Lahti, who was so outstanding she wrenched control from the youthful actors playing her sons. But who saw the show? The name I see in the envelope is Jennifer Garner, who'll soon be a big movie star with no need for TV work.
Best Drama Series: Deadwood, Lost, Rescue Me, Nip/Tuck and NYPD Blue.
Hey voters, give NYPD Blue a chance. It exited with great dignity and class. Nothing for all those Law & Order and CSI clones where the procedures are often more interesting than the actors.
I feel the Emmy winner could/should be Deadwood, neglected in its first season; Six Feet Under is missing because this year it was pretty terrible. But I think voters will gravitate to Lost because it's so red-hot popular.
Best Comedy Series: Desperate Housewives, Everybody Loves Raymond, Two and a Half Men, Arrested Development.
I think Desperate Housewives will get it with the exiting Raymond having an outside chance as sentimental favourite.
Quick now! Other choices? Jeremy Piven as best supporting comedy actor for Entourage. Best supporting drama actor should be Victor Garber (Alias), but it will probably go to Josh Holloway (Lost). Best supporting drama actress should be Alberta Watson for 24, but it would be nice to see Sharon Gless (Queer as Folk) get at least a nomination. Best supporting comedy actress should be comical vixen Nicollette Sheridan but voters may prefer outgoing laugh queen Doris Roberts (Raymond).
I saw only a few of the eligible TV movies, but one I did catch that impressed me was CBS's Plainsong with Aidan Quinn and Megan Follows.
