Summary: Sam and Dean as children and the logic only children have
A/N: Sam is 4 in this.
It all started with Pastor Jim. Their father was on another mysterious hunting trip, and it was going to take longer than most, so he left his boys in Jim’s care. Sam always liked Pastor Jim. He was nice to Sam and he spoke to Sam like he was a grownup. One day Sam woke up early and started to look around the church in his pajamas. When Jim found him he was looking at the paintings, and he asked Jim about the angels in them.
Jim smiles, “You’ve heard about angels before haven’t you Sam?”
Sam nodded eagerly, “They have wings and they help God.”
Jim’s smile grew wider as he noticed how Sam’s eyes lit up. Every instance someone took the time to teach the boy something new he would show more interest than any other child he met, “Yes, they do help God, but there is more to angels than that. They look after people, they perform God’s will, but they are not human.”
Sam stared up at the enormous painting of the angel Michael in awe, “How are they different from humans?”
Jim thought about how to explain it best to a child, “They don’t have human vices. They aren’t selfish or cruel.”
Jim wondered what Sam was thinking of when he saw the thoughtful way the boy tilted his head at the angel. It was as though he was realizing something. Before he could ask Sam what he was contemplating Dean burst into the room. He had obviously woken up a moment before and realized that Sam was not in the cot next to him.
When Dean saw that Sam was with Jim he calmed down slightly but he was still breathing fast when he reached Sam and pulled him into a fierce hug. Sam looked rather pleased that he was receiving a hug from his brother, but his expression grew remorseful when he noticed how worried Dean looked. “You have to stop running off like that, Sammy.”
“But- but I didn’t run, I walked. I just wanted to see the angels.” Sam said quietly.
“Sam, how am I supposed to look after you if every time I turn around you’re gone?” Dean’s resolve was faltering under the weight of Sam’s best sleepy puppy dog eyes. He looked adorable in his pajamas and he was still rumpled and warm from sleep.
“I’m sorry, Dean.”
“It’s OK, Sammy. But you still need more sleep, let’s go back to bed.” Dean rubbed at his eyes as he led his younger brother back to bed. Neither boy noticed that Jim had left the room shortly after Dean’s arrival, trusting him to make sure Sam got back to bed safely.

As Dean helped Sam into bed and gently pulled the covers around him, Sam stared up at his brother curiously. “Goodnight, Sammy” Dean said as he ruffled the smaller boy's hair.
Later that night, when Dean’s breathing evened out in sleep. Sam whispered into the dark room, “Goodnight, angel.”

Years later, when they discover that Dean is Michael’s vessel Sam doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry, but one thing is certain. No one is taking Dean away from him.
