“Elena,” Damon called out.
He heard everything. Damon listened to each heartbreaking word, unexpected pain tearing at him when she ended things with Stefan. It was something he imagined to want for awhile now but in truth, he still never thought it would actually happen. He heard her footsteps, the effort it took to wait until she was outside to fall apart. He called out, prepared to be her friend, but he wasn’t ready for her tears. He never was.
It was the one thing Katherine couldn’t even pretend to do convincingly-cry. The bitch cared about nothing, felt nothing and had nothing to lose.
But Elena, brave as she may be, was still breakable, and Damon just didn’t want to see it. Life would just be easier that way.
He walked towards her, shaking his head, with every intention of saying words that would comfort her but only his guilt came out.
“I riled Katherine up. I wasn’t thinking. I didn’t think.” Damon said quickly, as if it would cushion the pain as he acknowledged his contribution to Katherine’s twisted sense of retribution.
It was barely an apology. It was just the truth, and it wasn’t enough to steal her pain. But it was the only thing he had to offer.
“It doesn’t matter, Damon. She won. Katherine won.” Elena said through her tears, voice raw, broken and defeated. She looked like she wanted to say more but instead she walked out and closed the door behind her.
Damon was rooted in place unable to call out to Elena or follow her, hit by the full realization that he loved her and that everything before was just a shadow of what he felt for her now. No fireworks or rockets, just the silence that came with shattered pieces of her heart that he wanted to pick up, even if it wasn’t his place to do so.
He swallowed painfully as the need to protect her from any kind of pain overwhelmed him. He lost all will to win her favor or even just her forgiveness as he gave in to the reality that in that moment the only thing that mattered to him was saving her from whatever was killing her inside. Just to see her happy, to prove her wrong and show her that they could still win this, to not lose what made her Elena, he will kill Katherine, move away when all is said and done, leave her happy with Stefan and pretend he didn’t need Elena. He would do anything for her, anything and everything to make the tears stop falling-even break his own heart.
