В октябре 711 году Кордова была завоевана Мугитом аль-Руми, одним из генералов Тарика ибн Зияда, армия которого высадилась на Пиренейском полуострове в апреле того же года и захватила фактически всю южную и центральную часть вестготской Гишпании (нынешние Испания и Португалия). В 756 году Кордова стала Кордовского эмирата, который в 929 году трансформировался в Кордовский халифат (929-1031)... Кордова считалась одним из крупнейших центров арабской науки, поэзии и искусства...
