Here's a bit of a cheat - two publications for the price of one post! Both of these anthologies were edited by the fabulous Ekaterina Sedia and came out recently. Kathy is a great editor who really rounds up interesting fiction and these are my second and third anthologies with her. (The first was
Bewere the Night, where I wrote about a cursed lawyer in Brooklyn).
For the YA anthology,
Willful Impropriety, the theme was Victorian romance with an edge. I wrote a take-off on Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden. The original text ditches all characters of color pretty early on, so I decided to bring a teenage Indian servant back to Misselthwaite Manor. I combed through some annotated versions of TSG and researched colonial India and had a great time figuring out logistics. My favorite character is -- well, there aren't a lot, because hello, big giant empty house on the moors, but let's just say he looks like a teenage Jensen Ackles to me.
Bloody Fabulous is all about fashion and magic and fun things, and my story "Dress Code" is based, in part, on an old photo I have of my Nana McDonald, who one day in the 1930's decided to dress up in men's clothing. That used to be a transgressive thing. It still can be, although we look a lot more askance at men dressing women's clothing. In any case, I got to dig up some interesting bits of Irish history, use modern day Dublin and Massachusetts as settings (Revere and Marblehead) and have fun with a fiesty flight attendant and American soldier.
