[Squirt!

There's a soft disapproving noise, close to exasperation. Torn bites back the urge to bitch and instead takes a moment to actually think of something conversational. Questions that prompt discussions seem to be a popular fall back when people have nothing better to talk about...

Eh, fine.]

The word 'Sage' mean anything t'you people?

Do you mean like a wise-man ... or the herb? I saw it in the kitchen ...

Wise-man.

[Wtf, Herb? The hell is a herb got to do with that?]

We have Sages ... most of them are Air magicians or priests ...

Go on.

[The term 'magician's caught his interest.]

Well ... air magic governs speed and the senses. Air magicians who focus on its mental aspects are especially good at communicating with the spirits, or extending their senses into the distance. Some can even divine the future ...

[She liked talking about her world. It made her feel like it was still with her.]

Why do you ask?

That's really interesting.

[Kinda. The shit he can actually wrap his head around.

Also, cue poor-ass manners. He's jus' gonna ignore that question for now...]

Y'said that covers most of the Sages. Who make up the rest?

Well, there's still plane old non-magical wise-men, older people who have a lot of experience. I think the magic's more reliable ... but I guess it takes experience to interpret it properly.

[Yeah, she realizes she was ignored, for a moment.]

The magicians of your world sound like the soothsayers a'mine.

ttlyisabard February 20 2010, 04:31:01 UTC
Well, that's not all of the magicians. I'm nothing like the air magicians ...

Soothsayers ... what do they do?

Divine the future, mostly. They've got a kinda...connection to the creators of our planet. Not sure how it works, m'self. Jus' know they ain't wrong often, if they're the real deal. When I'm from, there's only one left in Haven. Old woman's been tellin' fortunes for a long, long time.

Sounds kind of like a priest. Not all of our magicians learn their magic. Some are born with it, others are chosen for it.

Huh.

[He thought it sounded like your Air magicians, but go on.]

So priests.

Some priests, not all priests are the same. Where I'm from, all magic can do the same thing, no matter who's doing it. The difference between a mage, a priest, and a sorcerer is just where they get their power. So an air mage and an priest who serves spirits of air are going to do mostly the same things ... priests just generally have to follow rules and restrictions.

Like I'm a fire sorcerer; I was born with my magic. If I worked at it, I could learn to use my energy for air or earth magic, but I could never learn water magic.

[Ooooh, he gets the difference now.]

Spirits, huh. Why worship them?

Reply

ttlyisabard February 20 2010, 21:06:48 UTC
Mostly because they're immortal and powerful, and it's good to be on their good side. People worship gods to get their blessings, and demons to hold back their wrath. Some teach and demand obedience, but most just want to be respected and honored. It makes them more powerful the more mortals that revere them ...

[Kate wasn't very religious. Her opinion was more economical than pious.]
