"Santa" is one of the many names for Father Christmas. He's a kind old man who gives gifts to all the children of the world on Christmas Eve.

Because he grew up very poor and sad as a child and wanted to make sure that no one felt like he had. Obviously a person can't take care of all kids, but he can try and make things a little better. Somehow along the way he had magic help him.
