It's unnecessary, but some people find it to be fun, which is sometimes enough of a reason.

Though it can be a bit troublesome.

For whoever chooses to have fun with it.

Some people don't care for this holiday and it frightens them, not in small part because other people make it a point to try to scare them. Still, it's not very serious.

You make it sound so distinctly separate.

It is, but it's also a tradition for many people that has been around for a long time, so it's understandable how it continues to be widely practiced, whether or not it's necessary.

A couple of the usual answers are 'it's fun' and 'it makes one feel more alive' and also 'just because' the last of which isn't really an answer, but then again, not a lot of people like giving straight answers.
