The arcade is on the route home from school. The spinning, sliding machines tend to be an attraction for most of Fry's class, though each are governed by a particular set of rules.

Fry's book specifies not gambling more than a pound in any day, whether it's on the machines or otherwise. He usually gets it divided into 2p coins so that it lasts longer; knowing full well that you never win money on them, he just enjoys watching them go down and collecting the tokens. James never puts any money in, but watches Fry play.

Maurice only ever acquires a number of coins that can be divided by three, then puts them in three on one side and three on the other.

Jo always goes for the teddy grasping machines, but has never yet got one. She's keeping records of how many attempts it takes to do because that's more interesting than winning.

Lenny, convinced that he is going to figure out the algorithm for the horse racing game, plays one hundred goes at two pence a time a night and notes down the results on his iPhone.

None of them habitually wander around to the other machines, but Jo spots Nimesh in front of one of the 10p machines. Like the 2p machine, the coins drop in by hand, then down onto the first shelf, then down on the second shelf, then if you're lucky some fall down into the bottom where you can collect them. Everyone knows the machine takes a big cut. Nimesh could lose a lot of money if he gets carried away on those things.

She watches, with a bit of a protective instinct. Then notices him staring at the machine without putting money in. He looks like he's calculating. Then, he reaches into his pocket and counts out five ten pence coins into his hand. Using his watch to count, he inserts them at a rate of one every two seconds, four into the first hole, and one into the second. Jo watches with interest, and notes with fascination that thirty coins drop out the bottom.

No way.
