“I thought you just had the one from Glastonbury?”
“I got another one.”
“When?”
“Yest’rd’y.”
“Wha--? Why would you do such a thing, Danny?”
“Well…it was fer som’n special.”
Nicholas’s face conveyed shock; not simply at his partner’s sudden reverting to his bohemian teenage tendencies, but also the words “someone special”. Since when did Danny have someone special?
“Wha-…who?....Sergeant Butterman!” Still stunned, Nicholas managed to spit out his thoughts, granted, all at once and with something of a chastising air. “What on earth, aside from several too many ciders at a rock and roll festival years ago would possess you to mark your body permanently in the name of a fleeting love affair?”
Danny looked slightly hurt. “Well…I were hopin’ it might not be that fleeting.” He scratched his head and shrugged in that Danny way. “B’sides, this person’s worth rememberin’ one way or another.”
Nicholas glared.
Danny gave a little lopsided grin.
“All right, then. Let’s see it.”
The younger man lifted the sleeve of his shirt to reveal his left bicep and a still-swollen, glowing red, fresh tattoo of…
Nicholas’s eyebrows went almost vertical and his jaw dropped, forming his mouth into that adorable upside-down D of hard-hitting disbelief.
“Oh, - ”
There on Danny’s shoulder was Kermit the Frog, sitting on a log with banjo in hand and rainbow behind, dressed in a Police Officer’s checkerboard hat and stab vest.
“You like it?”
Nicholas’s eyes rose to meet those of his partner - who was now grinning at him full-on.
“You did this...for me.” It wasn’t so much a question as it was a statement that confirmed for Nicholas that he was really seeing what he thought he was seeing. And that it meant what he thought it meant.
Danny nodded.
“Really?”
Danny nodded more emphatically.
Nicholas’s disbelieving face split into a huge grin.
