I always though it would be funny if someone made a movie where the main character was told something like, “If you want this to work out, then you have to drop by that gay couple who lives at the other end of town, and go get my stuff back” and then when the door opens, SURPRISE! It’s Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson playing the couple. I think that would hilarious, and I’m sure most people would get the joke. But it would only work if the character knew he was going to meet a gay couple, and the identity of the actors playing them was a surprise.
And what does that have to do with Nick and Simon? Well, the other day I though, “Owen/Ben would be funny in an American movie, but in an English movie it would have to be Nick/Simon!”
But then I though even more about it, and I started to question if it would really work. I mean, sure most people would get it, but would it really be as funny as Ben/Owen? Simon and Nick has already done so much gay’ish stuff together, that we’re sort of used to it by now.
Or maybe it just have to be done differently? I imagine the Ben/Owen couple to be rich, slightly feminine, living in a big house and having tons of little dogs.
The Simon/Nick couple would have to live in a small, dirty apartment, be very down to earth, and I don’t think they would pull “slightly feminine” off very well.
Ben/Owen would have to be revealed at the same time, while I think Simon/Nick would be funnier if we met Simon a couple of times where he mentions a Sam or Alex (or some other unisex name), whom he tells us he is romantically involved with and we’re lead to believe it’s a woman, but when we finally get to meet this person, it’s Nick.
You know what? Now that I think about it, I actually think Simon/Nick would work better in an American movie.
Or what do you think? Would it work at all?
this is on topic because...
