Previous Chapters Chapter 5
Jun Hong is glad that Daehyun did not come to school the next day. While waiting for the school bell to ring, Jun Hong keeps looking at the front door of the classroom, scared that Daehyun will be coming to school and well, make it a much more terrible day for him.
But no…Daehyun did not come to school. Yongguk, Daehyun’s close friend, came into class alone by the time the school bell rings. Himchan keeps asking Yongguk where Daehyun was but Yongguk shrugs his shoulders, saying that Daehyun told him nothing.
But for whatever reason, Jun Hong feels calm. There’s no need to worry about Daehyun for one day.
Youngjae keeps glaring at Jongup every time Jongup turns around to ask Jun Hong a question during class, sometimes unrelated to what their teacher is talking about. Questions like, Are you free this afternoon? Wanna do some hip hop dance practice?
When Youngjae quickly tells Jongup that he is being noisy and he couldn’t focus (an excuse to get Jongup to not talk to Jun Hong), Jongup just glances at Youngjae and gives him a smile before turning back to face the front. Jun Hong completely feels lost in between Jongup and Youngjae. He does not know exactly why the both of them are acting this way, as if they are big rivals.
The glares that Youngjae gives Jongup keep going on and on until the first half of the day is over and it is time for lunch. When Jun Hong stands up from his seat, Jongup and Youngjae both ran to his side, asking Jun Hong to sit with each of them during lunch simultaneously.
“I ask him first,” Youngjae snaps at Jongup.
Jongup does not answer but gives Youngjae a sad face, slowly moving into a pout.
Youngjae groans, “Argh, don’t give me that look.”
“Guys, guys!” Jun Hong steps in. “We will all sit together, okay?”
Jun Hong shakes his head and walks out of the classroom, followed by Jongup and Youngjae. As the three of them walk down the staircase, heading towards the cafeteria, Youngjae talks about the upcoming school musical and the auditions will be held in a few weeks time. By the time they reach the bottom of the stairs, together with a bunch of other students, Himchan suddenly calls Jun Hong’s name from behind.
“Jun Hong! I need to tell you something! Jun Hong!” Himchan calls out.
The three of them turn around to see Himchan running down the stairs towards them when Himchan suddenly trips. Youngjae moves out of the way but ends up landing onto Jongup’s arms. Jun Hong shouted Himchan’s name as he falls off the stairs. Himchan tumbles down, screaming his lungs out.
At that moment, somebody dashes towards the stairs, stands at the bottom of the stairs and has his hands out, ready to grab Himchan.
Himchan lands onto the student’s arms, the force pushing the both of them onto the floor. Himchan groans, feeling a jolt of pain on his right ankle. He moves up a bit and looks down, seeing Yongguk’s face below his. Yongguk asks in his deep voice, “Are you okay?”
Himchan blinks a few times before he tries to stand up but could not. His ankle might be sprained. Jun Hong runs to Himchan, to help him. As for Youngjae, he looks up to see Jongup holding him and quickly moves back, brushing his uniform and acting nonchalant, as if nothing happened.
“Ouch, my ankle hurts,” Himchan groans, as Jun Hong helps him to stand up.
“You shouldn’t be running while going down the steps,” says Jun Hong. Yongguk stands up too, stretching his arms.
“What was I going to ask you?” asks Himchan, trying to remember why he called Jun Hong not long ago.
Jun Hong answers, “Save the question later. Right now, we need to send you to the nurse’s office.”
“I’ll do it,” volunteers Yongguk.
Without waiting for an answer, Yongguk immediately stands by Himchan’s side and bends down, putting one of his hands below Himchan’s knee and one at Himchan’s back. Yongguk carries him up and Himchan, unknowingly, puts his arms around Yongguk’s neck, his face all confused suddenly.
Yongguk starts walking away, heading towards the nurse’s office, leaving Jun Hong, Youngjae and Jongup watching. Jun Hong’s jaws drop at the sight of seeing Yongguk carrying Himchan, as if he is watching a bride being carried out by the groom after their wedding ceremony.
Jongup gives a blank face, looking slightly lost. He asks, “Is that really Yongguk carrying Himchan?”
~~
Science class came after lunch. During science class, neither Yongguk nor Himchan came back to class, which is quite odd especially for Himchan who has never missed any classes. Then after science, Jun Hong has singing class (a compulsory class for all students in Jisung Academy) but unfortunately, he is not in the same class as Youngjae or Jongup, much to Youngjae’s disappointment.
Jun Hong heads down to Music Room 2. Standing by the door, he notices that the music room is dark. Jun Hong raises his eyebrows and opens the door to the music room. He wonders, Why do my classes that involve performing arts always seem to be almost empty? He recalls the period of his dance class and that he and Jongup were the only ones.
Jun Hong walks to the side of the room, putting his hands on the walls to feel for the switches. As he searches for the switches, he realizes that the air conditioning is switched on in the room as he feels cold. He thinks, That’s odd. I thought all appliances must be switched off when no one is in the room.
He almost jumps when he hears a loud snore. Jun Hong squeaks and quickly searches for the light switch. When he does, he quickly presses and all the lights in the room were switched on. Jun Hong jumps at the sight of seeing a student, wearing a sweater over his blue school blazer and a hat covering his face, sleeping in the middle of the music room.
Jun Hong rubs the back of his curly hair. Who could be sleeping in the room where his class is held? And isn’t it against the rules to skip classes and go to some room and sleep?
Jun Hong walks towards the guy and goes to sit beside him. Jun Hong slowly bends down to take the hat off the student’s face.
"Eoh! It's Yongguk," says Jun Hong.
Indeed it was the tall student with the deep voice. Yongguk does not move an inch. His eyes are still closed, deep in slumber and Jun Hong makes a face.
"He is always sleeping; sleeping in class all the time. He even skips science class," mutters Jun Hong. "What does he do at night that keeps him up?"
Jun Hong keeps asking himself. The last time he saw Yongguk was carrying Himchan to the nurse’s office when Himchan tripped on the stairs and he and Himchan does not come into science class.
He figures that Yongguk will be his only classmate during singing class, just like being the only student with Jongup during dance class.
There is nothing to do. Jun Hong does nothing and stares at the sleepy, deep voiced guy. He keeps looking at the mirror at the back of the music room and plays with his hair.
Jun Hong jumps when Yongguk suddenly moans. An idea comes across the young boy’s mind. Jun Hong gets bored easily and starts to play by whispering into Yongguk's ear.
"Yongguk-ah, you know I love you, right?" the young boy playfully whispers. Jun Hong giggles, hoping a response would come out from Yongguk.
"Ja...jagiya?" Yongguk moans in his sleep.
"Yongguk...oppa?" Jun Hong continues, giggling about.
Yongguk, still in his sleep, creepily smiles, revealing his white teeth. He then laughs to which Jun Hong thinks it's a little scary.
"Jagiya," says Yongguk again, this time, he starts moving his arms, grabbing onto Jun Hong. Yongguk moves his arms behind the boy, hugging him and bringing into a resting position beside him, closer to his body. He repeats, "Jagiya."
Jun Hong panics and struggles out of Yongguk's tight grasp but to no avail. Maybe playing with Yongguk like that isn't such a good idea. Jun Hong can't get off from Yongguk's hold as he keeps bringing him closer. Jun Hong looks like a small little helpless mouse.
"Er...Yongguk, can you let me go?" Jun Hong says to him.
Yongguk, still asleep, answers, "You want to break up with me? No!"
"Not that I want to break up with you...I just need to be off somewhere..."
"Wae? You're not leaving me."
"Please?"
"No!" Yongguk answers. And with that, Yongguk holds Jun Hong even tighter and pulls him closer. Yongguk purses his lips, reader to pucker.
Jun Hong's eyes widen. He continues to struggle out of the tight grasp but every move he makes brought him more closer to Yongguk. If only Yongguk could just wake up.
Yongguk smiles again before puckering his lips, bringing himself close to Jun Hong's cheeks. The young boy can't move, letting his cheek be assaulted with Yongguk's kiss. That's the worse thing that ever happened to Jun Hong, being kissed on the cheek by a guy.
Suddenly, someone opens the door of the music room and walks inside. Jun Hong, his back facing the door, can't move and see who it is. The young boy gulps. This is gonna be embarrassing.
The person does not say anything, just watching Jun Hong, looking pitiful, and Yongguk, who is sleep-kissing Jun Hong's cheek.
"Yah!" the person yells.
Yongguk, his lips still placed on Jun Hong's cheek, slowly opens his eyes, blinking a few times. His eyes move and see Jun Hong's face close to his and his lips against his cheek. Yongguk moves back, blinking again to see if he is dreaming. Finally coming back to reality, he yelps and lets go of Jun Hong.
Jun Hong immediately stands up and brushes his uniform. He looks up to see who the person who entered the room and it was Himchan.
Yongguk yawns loudly and Jun Hong looks around the room, embarrassed. Himchan studies both Yongguk and Jun Hong before he asks, "What are you two doing? In the room? All alone? On the floor?"
Yongguk gives a blank, sleepy face. Jun Hong rubs the back of his hair and answers, "It's not what you think. We are not..." He pauses halfway, not knowing how he should say it.
Himchan immediately glares at Jun Hong, wondering exactly what the both of them did. Yongguk stands up and breaks the silence, “We are not doing anything, Himchan. I was at fault. I was sleeping.”
Himchan’s face hardens, like as if he doesn’t want to believe but then, he shakes his head. His answers, “You look kinda sleepy, Yongguk. You should get some rest. You can sleep during class, any class, just for today.”
Jun Hong furrows his eyebrows. Himchan allowed Yongguk to sleep in class. That does not sound like the class president that Himchan really is and is always following the school rules. It’s not likely of him to let someone do that.
“It’s okay,” Yongguk answers. “I already got the nap I needed. How’s your ankle?”
Himchan looks down at his feet before looking back at Yongguk, “It’s okay. The nurse said I can take off the bandage in a few days. I’ll be limping a lot though.”
Jun Hong further furrows his eyebrows. Yongguk and Himchan being nice to each other. Normally (it’s been three days since Jun Hong joins the school), Himchan would always say things like Yongguk being so lazy and all, sometimes banging on Yongguk’s table whenever Yongguk sleeps. This time, he is letting Yongguk off the hook. Guess he is being nice after Yongguk comes to the rescue.
Himchan and Yongguk both laugh to something that Jun Hong did not hear as he is preoccupied in his mind. Himchan clears his throat and faces Jun Hong. “Um, I came here because I was looking for you, Jun Hong,” begins Himchan.
“You were looking for me?” asks Jun Hong.
“Yes. I wanted to ask you something but I ended up falling down and hurting myself.”
“Oh.”
“Anyway, I wanted to ask you if you could pay 30 000 won because of the damages to your seat. It’s part of the school rules that you’ll have to pay for damaging school property,” says Himchan.
Jun Hong rubs the back of his neck, “I guess I’ll pay tomorrow.”
“By the end of this week at most,” Himchan replies before looking back at Yongguk and smile, “I hope you get some rest now. Your teacher is on leave today.”
“It’s fine, you know,” Yongguk answers.
“Yeah, thank you for you know…um…saving me…”
“Ah, it’s no big deal. You should be careful,” replies Yongguk. “If it happens again, I’ll come to the rescue.”
Himchan blushes. The both of them soon remember Jun Hong standing in the room too. Himchan clears his throat before saying he shall head for his singing class too (same class as Jongup) before turning around and limping out of the music room. As he closes the door behind him, Yongguk turns his head at Jun Hong.
“Well,” Yongguk begins. “Looks like I won’t be the only one in singing class from now on.”
