I think I´m finally adjusting to Peru. We were driving along today and I had sudden understanding of how people lived here. I stopped looking at the square houses plopped in the middle of the desert and wondering how the hell do they live here? The more familiar pacasmayo and the surrounding area becomes to me, the greater appreciation I have for it, and the people who live here. It´s a home just like anywhere else in the world. I guess Im now able to see beyond the foreign-ness of everything here and see more of the personal, more important relationships and communications that go on. Maybe all this seems obvious, and I guess it is, but it also is a truly striking revelation when feel yourself accepting and really internalizing another way of life. I think the following months plus will be easier.

This past week has been a constant party in town. Yesterday was Vente Ocho, peruvian independence day, which means party hearty for a week. The archaeologists on the north coast celebrate by getting together twice. the first of these gatherings happened yesterday at a site called san jose de moro. After seeing what they had excavated (large burials) we then all went to a discotecha in the nearby town of chepen for a an afternoon and evening of free beer and dancing. It was a good time. we were all pretty spent by the time we got home. the second gathering will be tomorrow in the large city of trujillo.

Today it was Expedition Pedregal. We climbed, or rather, scrambled, to the top of a mountain that hovers over the plateau where the site is. It was a ´near death´climb, as we termed it, but the view at the top was satisfying. It looked out over the area where our site is, and then on the other side another site excavted a few years ago. It was a really good time.

I´ve also started running int he morning with kelsey g. She´s been nice enough to lend me her second pair of running shoes, since i opted last minute to leave mine behind. The exercise puts me in a good mood for the day ahead.

Ah, yeah, i´m sure my internet time is up. better go.
