So while my birthday started out well enough, it pretty much ended in disaster. We spent the day seeing the national museum of peru, and walking around the area near out hotel. then we thought we'd be really adventurous and go over to barranco, a neighborhood all the tourbooks promised would provide us with an evening of entertainment. Not even a half hour within being there, however, some nasty ladron came and stole my purse. I feel stupid, to be sure, however having thought about what would be safest beforehand, I felt more secure with a purse tucked under my arm than a bunch of loose cash in my pockets. In anycase, the wretched event took place, and aside from a sore thumb where he yanked my purse away, I'm physically okay. Unfortunately, he got pretty much my entire life-- camera, bank cards, credit cards, my drivers license, my student ids, about $200 cash, my social securtiy. Yeah i'm fucked. But I canceled all the cards, so in the long run it's really just the camera that's the largest loss. and thankfully i left my passport at home, and put my cellphone in my coat pocket becuase it wouldn't fit in the purse. What an inconvenience though, I now have no way of getting money here. oh dear.
I'd say i've learned my lesson, but in some ways i knew the lesson beforehand. It's not ridiculous to carry a purse here, many people do. But i guess when you're walking around with a very blonde chica at your side, we stand out as targets. Oh well, nothing's to be done. At least this most unfortunate event happened on the first day, rather than halfway through. To be honest, i'm somewhat relieved to have lost everything, I don't really have to worry about losing much else anymore. ha.
Well, i'm hungry, and am ready for a fresh start.
