OK, I've had so much fun exploring vicariously through the eyes, sweat, risk of life, limb and wardrobe malfunctions of others, that I had to get into the act, at least to some extent. This is probably lame to those who regularly go to those forbidden and sometimes dangerous places. But this represents a link to a favorite place of mine that I visited back in the 1970's, and had to be the most spectacular estate that I've ever seen. For a good look at what this place was in its heyday click
here. Anyway, the place was pretty much decayed by the time I first saw it, but it was still awe inspiring just the same. They pretty much demolished it in 1980, but they left some artifacts as a reminder and perhaps a tribute to the former mansion.
The first pic is of the entrance columns taken from what had been inside the building.
The next shot is from the back of the gardens, looking back toward what was the house and the upper fountain and terrace steps.
Next is what was referred to as the West Belvedere.
Next is the east garden retaining wall, which it still performing its duty even as townhomes now grace the other side.
It's a shame they couldn't find a way to preserve this place. It was probably one of the finest examples of Edwardian era extravagance that this country had ever seen.
