So Camp Nanowrimo is upon us. In a little over an hour it will be officially June. I've done some thinking about what I want to do and I've decided to resurrect one of my favorite stories that has been kind of a favorite project of mine that just hasn't gotten anywhere. These last couple days I've been thinking a little more about the characters and the possible story line, and I think it could be really cool. It's not too specifically defined, but it's defined enough to give me a starting point, but not so defined that I'll be trapped.
Where the Shadows Fall is a story of rock-n-roll, danger and lust in the form of vampires, and power struggles. It follows a band lead by the stubborn but focused Jazz Holland, who's been in and out of bands since junior high when she started to find liberation in punk rock bands and the strings of her bass guitar. With her bandmates Mandy Cooper and Graham Stewart they've begun to break into the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill music scene and they've already released their first 5-song e.p. and gained a pretty significant fan following and a residency at a local pub/venue.
Then things change. A mysterious woman enters the picture at a gig one night. Jazz is immediately intrigued by this mysterious woman and wants to know more, but their first meeting is quick, just barely enough to give Jazz the sense that this woman is different from anyone else she has known. What she doesn't realize is that the beautiful, dark-haired woman she's just met is a vampire. And a DJ on a local college radio station with one of the most successful programs on the station, meaning she has the power to make or break many of the local artists.
At a band practice a few night later, the band finds learns that they've been accepted as an entry into a big music festival. Great news, right? Sure! Except Jazz is starting to lose her focus. When they play gigs, Jazz blames her newfound nerves on the idea of breaking into the music scene, or screwing up so badly that everything goes wrong. What she's really nervous about is the opportunity of seeing Carmen, the mysterious woman she has had only the briefest of exchanges with.
Their next gig Jazz is subconsciously looking for her (consciously she is refusing to accept the possibility that she's head over heels with someone--it's not part of her personality, or so she thinks.) and is disappointed when she doesn't see her. Until near the end of the show. And Carmen shows up. And changes the whole night.
