I had a discussion with Pope today about genetically altered food and government potential (read: willingness) to create situations where they use Terminator plant seeds (seeds that poison their own daughter cells so as not to reproduce). Pharmaceutical companies are pairing with pesticide companies then pairing with seed companies that pair with farming equipment companies (and so on) to form this supernova industry where if you don't buy these genetically modified seeds EVERYONE starves. It's not just tangible, it's happening. These companies are backing political candidates and forcing their consumers to vote in their favor using food as a bargaining chip. It's terrifying...but brilliant. Especially frightening considering 74% of the world's farmland participating in genetic mutations are here in the US.

Anyhow, as I was leaving Pope asked if I had felt like he was cornering me during our talk. Somewhere in the 15 minutes he had pointed at me, but it was only for effectiveness...by no means was it intimidation. I told him that I understood his gestures were rhetorical and that he was only trying to stress how terrifying being threatened with starvation would be. He still seemed pretty uneasy. He mumbled something about hoping I knew that he would never point at a college girl with the idea of making her feel badly. I made a joke and he pretended to laugh it off, but I think he was second guessing himself a little too heavily.

It's sad that American's are so ready to jump on the "Let's Sue Folks and Get Them Fired" train that educators have to walk backwards and dust their footprints off along the way.
