Once the Shadow had returned with her map, and enough copies for everyone else, Myra bowed out and returned to Ming's apartment above the shops. She found herself left with hardly an hour before the day started, so she brewed a potent kettle of tea and got an early start on her day ( Read more... )

He was proud of the armor. He'd rejected a few designs as being utterly impractical, if completely awesome and terrifying.

The finished product was sleek and fairly light, and beautiful in the way of things that are perfect for their purpose.. Where the body allowed for straight parts, they were made of smooth sheets of bone shaped to deflect blows away from the most harmful spots. He'd threaded those parts with preciously expensive titanium wires, using them like rebar to reinforce concrete. Where flexibility was needed and chainmail was traditional, there were hundreds upon hundred of human eye teeth set in close rows, slighly overlapped like fish scale. When she wore it, it closed around even her face, built to hinge and slide with her motions.

No one but Courtney could wear it; to put it on, she had to let it crawl and clatter in place around her. It was lighter than steel and stronger than leather, shot through with the titanium and as alive as Metody was. He had named it Herlinde, which meant 'Sheild' and was meant for women, and he thought she was the most beautiful thing he'd ever made.

He had made other things as well, happily spending his carefully horded money on a stunning variety of things. Many of them were parts for the walking skulls he'd made - some were filled with the strange potions made by Courtney, but others were filled with things intended to shock and horrify. He hoped he'd get at least an hour of warning before the whole thing went down - it'd be an awful shame if that standing order for thirty gallons of decoagulated pig blood and assorted viscera went to waste.

By the time the armor is finished, Courtney is in awe of Metody's craft, not to mention his generosity. She's seen golems of wood and bone, and even one of her beloved house goblins, Boniface, wears a skull-like visage, but she's never seen anything quite like Herlinde. She didn't expect the armor to be so...alive. After letting it creep into place around her, she spends a few minutes asking Metody if it's really okay for her to wear it, stroking the planes of bone and enamel carefully. It's safe to say she's grateful for the gift.

She is far from idle herself, however. She creeps out of the house late at night and sets up a ritual circle on the blacktop of the local playground (anything she does in the house is prone to notice by her uncle, even in his weakened state). There she practices spell after spell, mixing potions and forcing enchantments into small, breakable objects for Metody's creatures to carry. After a few days of this, she's sleep-deprived but satisfied: she has a dozen glamours and four powerful incendiary spells.

She takes some time to speak to a friend on the day before the event is to occur, but her parents and her uncle remain in the dark. The day in question finds her reading up on sustaining multiple shielding spells. She's determined to make it a learning experience.
