Cold darkness of midnight

Jun 03, 2011 17:48

Nigel was wandering the halls again. He didn't know what time it was other than very late or very early. He had given up on sleep, the nightmares coming too vividly and frequently now for him to find any refuge there. He had taken a handful of his caramels Devon had gotten him and went to the roof for a while to sit and think. He had sat in the ( Read more... )

Looking over at her clock, Devon saw '3:32' glowing brightly and she groaned. She was trying to get herself back on a regular human schedule, but she was nocturnal by nature and habit. Pushing back from the desk in her room, she stretched and looked around her room, smiling at the little knick-knacks she'd brought from home.

She'd even brought some of the older fae texts she'd collected that concerned vampires; figuring it would make a nice present to transcribe and offer them to Nikola. Knowing she wasn't going to be sleeping any time soon, she sighed and got up, figuring a cup of tea would be perfect right about now.

Pulling on a pullover sweater, she made her way in her pj's and barefeet down to the kitchen - not really that surprised to see Nigel up at this hour. "Hey, sweetie," she said, smiling. "Couldn't sleep?"

He jumped when she entered and he sighed. "Hi," he said softly. "No," he said, fighting to get the tea bag container open with hands that weren't quite working as well as he wished. He had let himself get too cold and he knew it.

She watched him struggling with the tin and came over, reaching for it and giving a small gasp when she felt his skin. "Nigel, you're freezing! What happened?" She pulled the tin from his hands and put it down before taking them in hers and rubbing them briskly. She then noted the fine shivering over his body and gave him a concerned look.

Her hands felt blessedly warm. "Im okay," he said quietly. "Just cold. Was sitting up on the roof for a bit," he told her.

"'A bit' my glowing white ass," she grumbled, stepping close and opening her sweater to wrap around him. Arms around his waist, she hugged him and tried to send some of her body heat his way, hands rubbing over his back. "You're part frozen, Nigel. Are you trying to make yourself sick?"

She debated on using her flames to warm him, but figured that might freak him out and she was trying to avoid that.

Nigel leaned into her warmth, eyes sliding shut. "I just needed time to think," he said. "It's quite up there," he said softly, his cheek resting on her shoulder.

"There are plenty of quiet places that won't make you get frostbite, you... argh," she growled in frustration and concern, continuing to rub his back and offer as much heat as she had.

He leaned into her heat, starting to warm slowly. Lord, he hadn't realized how cold he was.

"You're an ass and you deserve a severe scolding - which I'll be sure to give you after you've warmed up a bit more," she felt him relax a bit and sighed, slowing the rubbing and just holding him for comfort.

And a certain insomnia-stricken shrink wandered in, clutching a mug of cocoa, just looking for a couch and some crappy TV to push him off to sleep.

"Oh." He was sure his solar plexus did a little backflip. Ridiculous - of course. They'd barely known each other a week.

"Sorry, guys. I thought there was no-one in here."

Nigel jerked and instantly backed away from Devon on instinct. He looked at Will and started to relax. "Hi, Dr. Zimmerman," he said quietly, shivering now that Devon had gotten him a bit warmer.

She turned when she heard Will and a smile crept on her face. Aww, he looked adorable all rumpled up like that. Feeling Nigel still shivering, she gave Will a long-suffering look, "Nigel here felt that it would be a lovely idea to see what it felt like to be an ice cube," she said as she shrugged out of her pullover and wrapped it over his shoulders. "Go sit, I'll make some tea. It's what I was coming in here for anyway," she prodded him before he could protest.

Going over and grabbing the kettle, she smiled back at Will. "And what has you joining the nocturnals and creeping around, Zimmerman?"

Nigel pulled the sweater closer around him and sat down at the table, crossing his arms on the table top, resting his chin on them as he watched the other two.

"Sleep issues," he shrugged, smiling faintly. "Nothing of any concern, just a slight annoyance here." He'd had a nightmare the night before, gone to bed at around eleven tonight and not gotten even forty winks yet.

"Are you okay, Nigel?" He nodded reassuringly at his patient.

Humming, she set the water to boil and snagged two tea bags. "Seems to be the theme of the night," she said absently as she waited for the water to boil.

Crossing her arms over her chest and leaning back on the counter, she watched Will and Nigel. "You know, if you need an impromptu session, I can skedaddle for a bit."

"I'm alright," he said softly against his arms. "Just cold."
