Things That Go Bump in the Night

May 24, 2011 02:08

John rolled his neck, the continual hours of slaving over a microscope over the past few weeks had taken their toll on his body.  Stretching he made his way from one of the smaller labs to his room, cracking a few bones as he walked.  Yawning a little he smiled, things had quieted down somewhat since the recovery of the crate of blood and people ( Read more... )

With Nikola off with Helen and Will off doing analyzy things, Devon took it upon herself to go poke her nose where it probably didn't belong. It was late and most of the residents were sleeping, apart from the nocturnal ones. She hadn't met too many of the staff, other than Helen, Nikola, Ashley and Will. She was keeping an eye out for the Big Foot that apparently roamed the wild halls. She smirked as she crept down the hallway. This seemed to be a residential wing and she'd rather find something more fun. Like a library. Or a weapons room. Or something with things that had buttons.

After listening a moment longer, hearing the footsteps approach then pass his door John decided to check out who was intruding at this hour. A moment of concentration was all it took for John to appear on the other side of his door at the end of the hallway, in a position he judged to be immediately in front of the newcomer, cane grasped in his hand.

Devon looked up in shock as someone materialized in front of her. "Eep!" she gave a little jump in surprise towards the wall.

Eyes wide, she stared up. And up. "You poofed," she said, pointing at him. This must be the 'friend' Nikola had mentioned earlier. He was half dressed and seemed all the more menacing for it. The cane didn't look too friendly either.

Not sure what to do, she held her hands up. She didn't want to get in crap for blasting someone who was friendly, but wasn't going to sit and let herself bet beaten either. Tapping into her energy, she waited for his next move.

John reached out with his free hand and grabbed the stranger's wrist in the blink of an eye, "Observant," he commented coolly, "And who may I ask are you?" he asked in the same icy tone.

She gave her wrist a tug and glared up at him. She was all for touchy-feely time, but usually she liked a little warning. Or dinner. "Devon. And I'm going to give you to the count of three to let go of me."

Devon had learned a long time ago not to back down when presented with a fight. And if that's where tall, dark and brooding wanted to go, she'd give him a run for his money.

John looked down at her, "I'm afraid nothing you can do will scare me miss. I don't bluff," he said tightening his grip on her hand.

"One more question, your answer determines what happens next." he said after a moments pause, "What are you doing on this floor sneaking around at this hour of night?" he inclined his head slightly daring her to lie to him. One thing John had learned in his long life was how to tell when people were being untrue.

"Neither do I," she glared up at him.

"I'm looking for something to do. I'm bored. And now I'm miffed." She tapped into her flames and let them manifest on the hand he held, continuing to glare at him.

John looked down at his hand, the flames hurt, but he didn't loosen his grip and tucked the pain back in his mind, "Pretty trick," he said looking back at her, "Now try mine," he flashed out of the hallway and rematerialized with her dangling off the edge of the tower, suspended by her wrist.

Looking down at her as she dangled John said coolly, "You're lucky I believe you or this might be the last trip you ever take." He flashed them back to the hallway and released her arm, letting his own drop to his side. Standing erect he looked her over, "You're new here. I'm assuming Helen brought you in."

The trip surprised her, as did winding up outside dangling from his hand. Okay, that was a cool trick. She looked up at him, not sure whether to be impressed or more pissed.

Shifting back to the hallway, she brought her arm to her chest and killed the flames, looking him over, assessing. "No," she said, "not Helen."

Mister imposing thought he could just loom and gloom and get his way, did he? Well, he could kiss her glowing white ass if he thought she was scared of him. Having dealt with Rydel, her father, the council and Veritas before, one lone human male didn't pose too much of a threat to her.

John watched her, a slight wry smile betraying his thoughts. This little woman was not afraid of him, shaken yes, but not afraid. He liked that.

"You are however a resident?" he asked still watching, the fire trick had surprised him somewhat. He assumed she must be abnormal in some way, most people didn't spontaneously combust.

"I haven't decided," she said, rubbing her wrist. He was smiling at her. She wasn't sure if that was good or bad.

"What about you, Mister Poofy? You make it a habit of poofing around and threatening everyone, just for giggles?" There's be a bruise on her wrist, but fortunately, she healed quickly.

"Mister Poofy," he chuckled, oh yes, he liked her, "That's not one I've heard in a long time."

John took a half step back, giving her a little more room, "I am not a resident, although I reside here for the moment. My name is John Druitt," he said offering her his hand.

"Ah, and yes," he paused giving her hand a squeeze, "It is a habit."

When he held his hand out for hers, she took it out of reflex. "Strange habit," she grumbled.

The name was scratching at the back of her head, but she was distracted and couldn't remember where she'd heard it before. "Are you about done being all menacing?"

"You're not from around here are you?" he asked noting her comment. John gave her hand a firm shake, a proper shake, and then released it.

"My demeanor would depend entirely on you, Ms. Devon," he smiled more genuinely this time, "I just don't take kindly to strangers sneaking around my chambers in the middle of the night. A girl could get hurt doing that." the smile broadened. John had a feeling she wouldn't understand the joke, few people did, but he enjoyed making it nevertheless.

"Not even close," she said, taking her hand back.

Folding her arms across her chest, she eyed him. "There aren't exactly any signs on the doors saying who's staying where. Most of the rooms up here are empty. And I wasn't sneaking," she said, scowling, "I was walking quietly."

The man had a strange, twisted sense of humor. She might like that, if she decided if she liked him or not. What was it with everyone attacking her when they met her? It could give a girl a complex.

"Walking quietly through a generally abandoned wing of this building is an easy way to make people suspicious of your intentions. There are things around here to be wary of.." he thought to himself, including present company.

John looked around, "Would you care to make this conversation more civil?" he motioned in the direction she had come from, "There are perfectly amiable rooms designed for this type of encounter just down this hallway. I would be happy to show you."
