Lo, gather round and hear, how to keep your students out of trouble when you have a substitute teacher. The secret, apparently, is to write them a note and sign it.
"Anybody who gets in trouble with the substitute teacher is in trouble with me!"
I don't know why that works, but it does.
Two approaches have curbed the demand for pencils borrowed from the teacher this year. One is a custom-made self-inking stamp for the planners they are required to carry. "Needs pencil"
The other is what I said to the first student of the year who said she needed a pencil.
"Let me see what I can scrounge up. Here. Somebody chewed on the eraser, but it's been a couple of years. The germs are dead by now."
