Opener! Chapter 2: Puzzling Moments
I looked at the red apparitions and took a deep breath. I got up quietly and slowly walked towards the door. Each step felt like I had lead strapped onto my shoes. The wooden floor creaked audibly but the apparitions didn’t seem to react to any of my noisy steps. Thank god. Just a few more steps to the door. Five…four…three…
The next step I took caused the floor to break and I almost screamed in surprise but held it in. I quickly looked around to see if they reacted to the loud wooden noise. None of them moved. I took a mental sigh of relief. I quickly wiggled my foot free from the hole and then proceeded to the door.
The door was nothing special, but I took the extra precaution to open it slowly with a nearby stick, just in case there was some kind of trap behind it. Sure enough, I heard a tripwire go off and then several spikes erupted from the sides. If I had walked through the door normally, then I would’ve been skewered into pancakes.
The spikes receded into their holes and then the door finally opened. I eased into the room and shut the door behind me. I quickly moved away from it just in case the spikes were going to come out when the door closed. Nothing happened.
I looked around the room. It was a clubroom. If I’m not mistaken, this was probably the art clubroom based on the pictures framed on the wall and there were numerous canvases propped up across the area. There wasn’t much else in the room, so I decided to take a look at the pictures.
This first one I looked at was a bit odd; it depicted several people being gored by different methods such as impalement, eaten alive, hanging, and other things I don’t want to describe. It was a bit disheartening. The next one had several people split amongst different floors, trying to find a way out. Was this some kind of hint for the situation we were in now? The last one had a note attached to it. I grabbed it and opened it.
‘Yuki Tae, 16. Sophomore at Arcadia Styx. She has gone missing for the last nine days. She was last seen leaving the campus around 4 pm. If anyone has seen this girl, contact the police immediately.’
A missing girl case, huh. Wait a sec, Arcadia Styx? That’s the name of our school…so this school and ours are connected in some way. Well, at least it makes navigating this school a little bit easier. But I’m not sure how far back this decrepit school goes. That wasn’t the biggest concern though. There was a bloody message at the bottom. Words that read ‘Help me…’
I don’t know if it was the girl itself who wrote the bloody message or if someone else did. All I could guess was that someone was confined here. I decided to keep the message with me and noticed a hole in the wall that the note was covering. There was a switch.
Should I press it? Maybe I shouldn’t. I’ll keep it in mind as I explore the rest of the room though. I went through numerous cabinets and couldn’t find anything of any importance. Was there really nothing in this room? The only thing that came to mind was the switch. Guess I didn’t really have an option since the apparitions were outside.
I went up to the switch and pressed it. I heard something behind me slide down and as I turned around something slammed into me, a skeleton.
“Ahh!” My heart sunk a bit. I thought I was going to get killed or something. I took a minute to calm down and then quickly got the skeleton off of me. I then noticed a hidden room in the back. I went to check it out.
It was completely covered in dried blood. The stench of the room was horrid. The air felt twice as cold in there than it was out in the hallways. I kept up my guard as I stepped inside. A locker room. I tried opening some, but they were locked. Tch.
At the end of the room, there was a safe. There was also a note attached to it.
I read it. ‘Your task is to draw lines between the pins on this board to form seven squares. The seven squares do not have to be uniform in size, but you can only use each pin once. Fail and you die. Succeed and this safe and the door will open.”
Suddenly the passage was sealed and gas started pouring into the room. What the?!
PUZZLE TIME. (Use different colored lines to indicate the squares.)
