I love this moment, because it's the first time they both realize either way they're going to lose.. again.. only this time, he sees it up close and personal in her face. Before when she was broken coming to their rescue, he wasn't there.. so it didn't really happen and he could shrug it off as a consequence not affecting him. But this, right here, is proof undeniable - unclose and personal, she's shouldered that pain on her own and it shakes him, as much as it does her; to know that ever let her carry that on her own in the first place.
