Teyla heard the familiar noise again: racing cars. After the Daedalus brought them to the Pegasus Galaxy first, it seemed the boys could not get enough of them. Yes, boys. When she was on a mission with them, they were men, aside from the occasional joking around, but most of all doing what they were trained to do. But back on the base, they could act as little children. Torren would fit right in with them in a few years when he'd be able to control the consoles. For now she had to accept being run over in the hallways from time to time. At least they would let her know beforehand when they would play and they knew she would be doing her daily walk after their first encounter. Outside those daily walks, she listened carefully to any noise coming from the corridors she was about to approach.
As she turned the corner, she looked into the faces of two highly concentrated men. This was no ordinary game. They played it as if their lives depended on it. And it often did. In some way. Both Sheppard and McKay gave the other a hard time when it came to losing. They were dreadful losers, but equally dreadful winners. She vividly remembered the pie incident. Lemon pie. Rodney had gone berserk, and needed a pill from Keller to calm him down. She could still see the deadly fear in his eyes.
"Hey, Teyla! Where's Torren?" How Sheppard knew it, she didn't know as his eyes staid fixed on the little cars and didn't let go.
"Hello John, Rodney. I am out for a run. Torren would be a little uncomfortable in my arms I suspect." She had stopped her run through the city to see her teammates compete. She tried to take a run every day. Things came up that made it impossible, but the exploration of a planet's surface during a mission was usually a good alternative next to her daily fight training with the Atlantis personnel.
"Ha!" McKay shouted as the blue car hit the wall and the red car turned the corner at the end of the hall. He gave Sheppard his usual satisfactory look. "Beat you! Hey Teyla."
"You didn't beat me! I was saying 'hi' to Teyla, so I let go of the console." Sheppard gave McKay an utterly displeased look back.
"You were! I saw your tongue out of your mouth! That means you were in a deep state of concentration." McKay put his hands on his hips, determined to be officially deemed the winner.
"How on earth were you able to see that? You were focused on your own car!" Sheppard faced the scientist, while Teyla rolled her eyes at the two.
"Teyla, you must have seen it? Am I right or not?" Both men turned to Teyla. She looked at them, and without a second of a thought, she started jogging back from where she came.
"Hey! That's not fair! I won this round fair and square! Come on, Teyla! Tell him! Oh sure, run away. I always knew you liked him better than me!"
Without looking back, she smiled to herself and turned the corner to the transporter, back to the main tower, whilst still hearing a loudly shouting McKay, and Sheppard aiming for a rematch. As she shut the transporter doors, the voices ebbed away, and the buzzing sound of race cars reemerged.
