As I was driving home yesterday, I started thinking about the world.  You know, in the grandiose sense.  It actually started with the news.  Darn the news!

Some news source was doing a piece on the war because yesterday was the 8-year anniversary of the WAR ON TERROR (bang bang, lightning lightning).  There was an interview with an Afghani man who said something along the lines of--

"I love America.  I think America will do a lot of great things for us.  Woooooo i am now beardless."

They then went on to show a clip from an Afghani woman today.  She said something along the lines of--

"Literacy is at an all-time low.  We think the American soldiers are more focused on war and fighting than they are on helping the people."

Well.  Can't disagree there.

For me, literacy is something I am passionate about.  Everyone has the right to read, and in our society, we are lucky enough that is this is true for the majority.  We are lucky to have access to information and by extension, the right make up their own mind.

In Greg Mortenson's Three Cups of Tea, he works tirelessly to bring literacy to Pakistan's children (especially girls).  He helped to build schools all throughout the remote hills of the Karakourum,

So, while sitting on all of this information, my restlessness with life became startlingly apparent.  It's not that i hate school or that I'm too busy or anything.  It's that I want to start to my life already.

I just want to stop wasting my time trying to prove to people how smart I am and I want to start making a difference in other people's lives.  I get that this sounds oh so altruistic.  But I'm just trying to make the point that there is potential in everyone, and I'm only going to be idealistic for so long.  I'd rather get something done now.
