I realized lately that my knowledge of good music is painfully lacking. The playlist in my iTunes is brimming with safe, top 40 fare that is mostly going on a decade old. It's sort of like a time capsule.
Look everyone! We've booted up Brett's computer and discovered the years 1996-2002! Don't stand too close, you might cause Creed to get back

First, I'll second Neutral Milk Hotel (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=191999487) Hasil Adkins (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=90876926) The Fratellis (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=37213256) and Amy Winehouse (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFVM5pVTwkM).
Now, we can get into my picks.
The Apples In Stereo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TREdIwJ1iRc) - Recommended albums: The Discovery Of The World Inside The Moon, Fun Trick Noisemaker
Architecture In Helsinki (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=21242735) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXIzyquw-kc)- All 3 of their albums are pretty good, I recommend the songs: Heart It Races, The Owls Go, Fumble, Wishbone, Hold Music and The Cemetary.
Belle And Sebastian (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvS902DLEVI)(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMBTUYZeHPk) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYZPTTgMGCk) - Another band where all the albums are good. I would recommend songs, but there are far too many to like.
Busdriver (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpP-8tJ-9Js)(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HalDFVVo4aY) - One of the fastest rappers in the world, known to rap over jazz beats, albums tend to be themed and highly intelligent. Can be kind of hit or miss.
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttMY3j_1WLk)(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gtv3fSbuKvc) - Indie darlings of about 2 years ago. Strange lyrical stylings. Tends to be a love or hate it band.
The Dandy Warhols (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=280087) - Had the hit 'Bohemian Like You'. If you know the music pretty well, you will notice that they have been background music in quite a few commercials. Pretty good for never really hitting the mainstream.
The Fever (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P93h7oJ5QcQ)(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mK6DWGK5EIo) - NYC local band. Definate electronic influences, with a dance/new wave type of style.
The Fiery Furnaces (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=118145113) - Experimental indie group. Download any of their music, just avoid the album 'Reheasing My Choir' like the plague.
Kaiser Chiefs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQjpvEmpa6g)(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spYcp0ZB4nM) - Fairly popular UK band from the same style as Franz Ferdinand.
Maximo Park (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zx00NuMSipc)(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNxB9IWVd9U) - Another band similar to Franz Ferdinand. Slightly more underground in the US than Kaiser Chiefs.
The Mountain Goats (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYCzDhaRV60)(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=op3IAII9b2U) - Minimalist and folksy. What it 'loses' musically is made up by the fact that this is lyrically some of the best songs around. I personally like 'Zopilote Machine' and 'The Sunset Tree' albumwise.
Of Montreal (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=17161479) - A musical chameleon. Each album is in a slightly to fairly significantly different style while still being very good.
The Shins (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M11Kr1-q-pA)(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqYMRcnLU0o) - Band featured promently in the movie 'Garden State'. Music tends to be lowkey and calm. Their first 2 albums are both good, haven't had a chance to peruse their latest effort yet.
South (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=16586949) - UK indie band. Has electronic influences, but uses them in a fairly 'soft' way. I've only actually listened to the album 'With The Tides', but that entire album is pure gold, and I don't see how any of their other stuff could be that far from it.
Super Furry Animals (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=161156165) - Another music chameleon. Tends to be catergorized as experimental or psychedelic. Has quite a few songs sung entirely in Welsh.
