Back from Virginia, sleep deprived and full of stories. After not sleeping wednesday night, Chad and I took the 8-hour bus ride to Richmond Virginia, where we met Rez. Work began almost immediately, as we had to unpack all of the TVs, systems, and games for the game room. By thursday night, the room was ready to rock. We didn't have quite as many systems as we had hoped, but there was a fair amount of video game goodness.
Friday was crazy. We arrived at the game room a little after 8 am to have it ready by 9. And at 9 am sharp, that room was bopping. I had no idea that games would be so popular at an anime convention. Actually, as I learned, anime cons seem to be more about Japanese culture in general than just simply anime. Because we were short staffed, Chad, Rez, and I manned the game room by ourselves from 9 am until 1:30 am with little reprieve. Thankfully, there were no real incidents, and the day ran pretty smoothly. Really, the only drawback was a handful of whiny teenagers who were pissed we wouldn't let them bring in their own games/systems to play, or that we had Naruto 2, but how could we POSSIBLY not have Naruto 4? Stupid, petty shit like that. We hooked up a TV at the main table and played Captain S episodes all weekend. A few recognized us and talked to us. The funniest story about that was the kid who came up and told us he knew us from screwattack, and came back several times throughout the weekend. At one point on saturday he asks me "So, are you in the show?" Chad and I (dressed in the Captain S costume, mind you) looked at each other, dumbfounded, and Chad said "No, he's just cos playing."
Saturday was the best day of the con. More people arrived, alleviating the need for Chad, Rez, and I to always be there. Chad and I took this opportunity to make a Filler Friday for this week by dressing me up as Captain S, and interviewing cos players at the con. My lack of anime knowledge will either help or hinder the video, but I guess you will all be the judge. Saturday night was our showing of Captain S, and I was pretty happy with the results. The turnout was OK. Chad thinks it was as many as Magfest 5, I think it was a little less, but regardless the reaction was the key part, and they were a great audience. We only had an hour, so we showed episodes 6-10 since they're our strongest. We quickly summed up Episodes 1-5 and then ran the rest of the season. The crowd ate it up, many of whom had never seen the show. I left feeling pretty good about it. The night was capped off by a little party in our room.
Overall, the weekend was just a good time. We got to see our friends, got to expose Captain S to some new people, and we even sold a few t-shirts and posters. And we invented
Douche Waffle, a pokemon sure to be banned from every tournament. Ever.
