But seriously, your best bet is to take a bartending class (or just set up a day with me and I can take you through the drink making basics) and then being confidant when you go into a place. You're already at an advantage being a woman, but it REALLY helps if you seem to know what you're doing. If you're comfortable with it, get someone you know who works at a restaurant to vouch that you bartended there. A lot of places in New York are pretentious and will not even look at you if you don't have at least a year of "Manhattan experience" as if bars on this 12 mile stretch of island were shrouded in some sort of mist that made pouring alcohol into a glass behind a wooden slab harder. Fucking Manhattanites. But I digress. The bottom line is bartending is more about being aware (hadling money, keeping an eye on many customers at once, keeping up with servers, etc.) and having a personality that keeps people wanting to come back (being hot really doesn't hurt either) than mixing drinks. Ask Kitty, that part is so secondary it's laughable.
I'll help out in any way I can. I still have all my packets from the class I took, and really all you'd need to learn is how to identify glassware, what certain types of liquors are, and how to make some of the more popular cocktails. Other than that, get yourself a bartending book and fake it.
