Inspired by something on a friend's journal, which I shall not link to as it is a locked post.
I am impressed with the strength of people who are able to transcend their past. A person's psyche can be damaged by either a bad roll of the DNA dice, or an unfortunate series of events. But the evidence is mounting to convince me that the nature-vs-nurture argument does not tell the whole story. A person does what they do because of 1) nature, 2) nurture, and 3) the X factor. Some people are simply so strong inside, have spirits that shine so brightly, that they will succeed no matter what you throw at them.
In my experience, a person's birth family is very likely to harm its members somehow, even when they mean well. Churches also are often like this. We don't get to choose what family or church we're born into, but we do get to choose what family and church we join as an adult.
What I've realized is that I'm attracted to people with a strong X factor, people like
senssuzy,
zaratyst,
kovee, and
kyra_ojosverdes--just to name a few examples, and there are others. Wherever I can, I shall make these my chosen family, and my church. I hope to continue to learn from their examples about the beauty and power of the human spirit.
