i had a day in which i thought these things:
smoore
smoorecrux
smoore11804
smoore41506
happygroovething
happygroove
samuraiswrdguin
directingshot
i’ve got all these names.
& also my neighborhood is so many fences.
“you guys, this is my square. the chainlink says so.”
& the chainlink don’t lie.
i’ve wanted a hedehog & a tattoo for so long, & i just. don’t. have them yet.
geocaching has just...taken over. it is the best. stay tuned for the coordinates of the st louis horcrux caches. go to geocaching.com to start the best hobby ever (decatur kids, there are plenty in fairview, rock springs, and even a few in the residentials/downtown of decatur).
i’m ordering most of my christmas gifts-to-others online, & my estimates tell me that the shipping (about 8000 miles, all ground) has produced 40 tons of carbon, which is more than what i've produced or helped to produced (carbonfund.org, individual zero carbon count) this entire year by quite a bit.
40 tons of carbon could be offset with roughly $220. some of my purchases, however, involve the planting of four trees in reforestation projects. each tree in its lifetime will consume the amount of carbon produced in a 740 mile trip. that cuts my shipping mileage, in a way, to 5400 miles, or roughly 27 tons of carbon, which can be offset with roughly $149.
my math probably has more than a few flaws, and the “10lbs of carbon per mile of shipping” estimates i found could easily be worst case scenario or even an extreme exaggeration of the norm.
but the point remains-i need to buy locally next time around, because the shipping and handling costs don’t kill me, but the shipping and handling environmental costs might kill my kids. why didn't i think about this until now?
if you want to buy me a christmas present, go to carbonfund.org and offset your own carbon footprint, at least a little. start recycling. buy locally and organically. support green technologies. change your incandescent light bulbs to cfls (walmart sells them very cheaply now in pseudo-bulk). do some simple simple things to make the world a more enticing place to live for my kids and yours.
oh, and i get to do the lighting design for assassins in march.
