Sisters

Kyuzo didn’t show it, but the days after her mother’s disappearance left her quite lonely. The only comfort was the memory of her mother’s teachings. She practiced during the day as a normal exercise, but she was careful not to show too much emphasis or deveotion to it in front of her teacher and father. At night she practiced heavily in secret in her room when she should have been asleep. She kept track of servants walking through the halls by their presence. She would practice sneaking in and out of her home as well, all this in memory of her mother. But only to herself, she would admit that she was lonely.
Her father was expecting a guest. Her father had her hidden in her room with some things to keep her occupied. As much as he “loved” her, he was ashamed of the woman he saw in her. Kyuzo didn’t mind. He didn’t want him to forget her mother. Kyuzo ignored the chaos outside her room and entertained herself with meditation. A strange sound interrupts her and she grows curious. The sound was a steady “pat, pat, pat” on the stones outside. Kyuzo opens the sliding door to the veranda. Out in the garden was a girl her age playing with a ball humming a playful poem. Kyuzo didn’t really interact with other girls. Other girls didn’t understand her and were afraid. Kyuzo continues to watch the girl until the girl looks up and notices her. She catches the ball in her arms and smiles.

“Hello. Want to play with me?”

“….”

“Come on! We can play catch!”

“…” Kyuzo steps down from and stood in front of the girl.

The girl bows.

“My name is Nasami Kakita. You must be Kyuzo, yes?”

Kyuzo nods and returns the bow.

“You don’t talk much do you?”

Kyuzo shakes her head.

“Ah, well. Let’s play then! Ready?”

Kyuzo nods and holds her arms out. Nasami throws the ball gently into Kyuzo’s arms. Kyuzo clutches the ball for a moment and tosses the ball back. This goes back and forth for a time. Kyuzo sighs and doesn’t release the ball. Nasami blinks.

“Are you bored with this game?”

Kyuzo nods. Nasami nods in understanding and folds her arms to think. Kyuzo stares at Nasami as she ponders.

“Well, since I suggested playing ball, you can think of something. What do you like to do, Kyuzo?”

“I like origami.”

“Really? I like that too! You have paper, right?”

Kyuzo nods.

“In my room.” Kyuzo gives Nasami her ball and walks away leaving Nasami to follow.

They enter her room and Kyuzo goes into her closet. Nasami looks around and notices how very simple and plain it was. The only thing decorative was the doors with Kyuzo’s family crest. Her bedding was in the closet of course and there some things inside. Nasami noted there were bokken on a shelf above the bedding before Kyuzo closes it and brings a fancy box to her. They sat together and Kyuzo distributes some paper squares between them to make origami. They made a few simple creatures, especially cranes. Nasami made many of them and Kyuzo liked them. They were perfect, every one of them.

“You do cranes nice.” Kyuzo comments.

“Thank you. They’re my favorite animal. Do you have an animal you like?”

“Dragons.”

“That’s a good a one!”

There was silence between them again as they folded. Nasami looks at Kyuzo again.

“I saw your bokken. You practice with them?”

“Yes. I want to be a samurai.”

“I bet your dad’s proud of you.”

Kyuzo stops. Nasami stops as well.

“No. He doesn’t really like it.”

“Oh. Why not?”

“He’s afraid I’ll betray him. Like my mother.”

Nasami looks down.

“Oh. I have heard about that.”

“So you have. Yet,” Kyuzo looks at her with a slightly curious expression. “You’re here spending time with me. You’re not afraid of me.”

“Why should I? You’re not your mother. Kyuzo is Kyuzo.”

“What if I said that I do want to be like her?”

“What do you mean?”

“I want to be a samurai, because I will have a purpose. I can be something more than just a girl.”

“I’m going to be a samurai as well, like my parents.”

“I hope you do,” Kyuzo smiles for the first time. “We can be something more together maybe.”

Nasami nods and holds out a pinky. Kyuzo frowns.

“What’s that?”

“You do it too!”

Kyuzo does the same and Nasami hooks her pinky around hers.

“From this day on, we are both going to become samurai. Sisters of the sword.”

Kyuzo smiles again. “Sisters…I like that.”

Nasami and Kyuzo continue to stay in each other’s company until her father was in search of her. Kyuzo’s father was surprised and became nervous of Nasami being with Kyuzo all alone. He had them join them outside amongst his supervision as he continues to talk with Nasami’s father about things. Nasami pretended not to notice Kyuzo’s father discomfort, or just plain ignored it. From that day on, Kyuzo and Nasami became friends and sisters. Kyuzo didn’t feel lonely anymore. Even after Nasami left, she remembers their promise and realizes she isn’t the only one with big dreams.
