Geeking for the Holidays

I love shopping for my nephew. Kirk just turned 12, and among his favorite toys are "project" toys of the build-it variety. So his uncle has gotten him a pair of Revell 1:48 scale models that he and his father and I can build together. It was a tough choice in the hobby shop - I spent almost 25 minutes there perusing the shelves and debating what would be cooler. Kirk has always been interested in the stuff his Dad does in the Army, and I considered getting a Hummvee and a UH-60 Blackhawk (in the same scale, which is sort of tricky to locate, but I wanted Kirk to be able to display them together). In the end, though, I got a Spitfire and a Stuka, opting for a pair of WWII war-birds, because those are his first love.
I refrained from getting all the paints we'd need for the project. We can do that shopping trip after we decides when we'll build these.

And to satisfy my own re-ignited model-fascination, I got a WWI Nieuport fighter, in the same scale as the other two. And that will be Uncle Sam's present to himself this year.

Last night, SarahJo and I watched the remake of "WIlly Wonka" or, as I've affectionately re-named it, "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Industrial Accidents". It was enjoyably creepy. I liked the dark overtones, but I could have done without the tragic familial backstory that every director seems obligated to add to any story they touch these days.
