When Fencing, Mind the Floor.

I'm used to fighting on carpet. The plastic tarp that covered the gymnasium floor at Central Catholic was different. Sort of slippery. Just a little mobile against the floor itself. And thin...

I'm in the habit of fast aggressive fighting, which means that when you take a leg shot, you should attack as you're going to the floor. This works better when you're not lunging forward to land on your kneecaps on a hardwood floor because you've forgotten that it's not carpet...

I mean, I killed the guy but I discovered the next morning that my knees were turning purple. Not the whole kneecap, of course - just the quarter-sized contact points. Doesn't hurt while I'm walking or anything, but if anything presses on my knee, I stand up fast. I'll be more careful from now on.

And if we ever hold an event at the National Guard Armory again, will somebody remind me not to pull a "Laurelen" like that on a concrete floor? I'm too young for reconstructive surgery. eek. Ow.

the price of vistory, lingering pain
