It's been annoying me recently how stupid these rich teenagers in Canada act, in spite of all our formal education. When I say rich, I mean like EVERYONE who reads this post and myself, because if you have money in the bank, money in your wallet, and some change in a container in your house, you are among the top 8% of the world's rich.

I think it's great that you realize it at an age where you could be just like the next person - spending huge bucks on brand names, etc.
But I think for many people it's a personal choice, I think that as long as you make that money yourself, at a job, it's your choice whether you would like to save it or blow it on something.

It is your choice no matter if you earn the money, get the money for free or whatever. All im saying is, in my opinion people who spend their money on short term things like clothes and restaurant food are acting stupidly in irresponsibly. But like you said, its their choice.

hm, as long as it makes youhappy.
never forget that we as human beings have a very short lifespan, so may as well enjoy it by indulging in things that make people happy. No that saving's wrong, as long as you don't save up a million and then realize one day that you're like 90 then it's like "shit"

short lifespan = 65 years
Restaurant meal = about 40 mins.
Clothing = As long as it fits you and stays in your style, usually about 1.5 years, less if you're vain Money in the bank = Infinite amount of time, even after you're dead. The money can be used by your relatives, by a charity, or on your funeral and burial.

this might be selfish and i don't care, but i'm not earning money so my relatives can spend it after i'm dead.

Hmm. Well thats you're decision. But when your mom dies(God forbid it happen any time soon, but she is older than you), wouldn't it be nice for you to inherit some money, if only to give her as good a burial as she deserves?

Insurance is up to 5 times her coverage... as opposed to you getting, at 1000$ a year compounded for 40 years at 5.6%, like 60,000... a good year's salary.

That is very good coverage.

But you'd get much more than that if the money spent on clothes is invested in a company on the rise. Thats how the world's richest people make their money; not on a lot of unnecessary expenditures, but on solid stocks, RSPs, GICs, and when enough money comes, business ventures. Your savings could be the nest egg to start a business.

Also, I know you would rahter spend you're money yourself, but couldn't you save on a skirt or so, and instead give it to somewhere like the Ronald McDonald house? Wouldn't that give you some satisfaction?

Hey, don't Even start with the Ronald McDonald thing. You have no idea how many charities my family gives to, nor don't you know that every time I'm downtown I buy at least one homeless person a meal, or that right now I have two boxes of toys packed in my room to give to a shelter. With all that said I still manage to spend quite a bit of money, which I don't feel guilty about for a second cause I know I have enough values to give back to those in need.
But I'm not about to sacrifice my personal style or w/e for a couple of extra bucks in the future.
I'm more of a "live each day to enjoy it" type of person.

Ok. Look you to it.

However, you can't say every time you're downtown, because when we went to the original picnic, you didn't by food for any homeless.
