A brief idea

Oct 20, 2005 00:29

This was in the "Hendrix Today" email that I received today. I haven't read one of the daily newsletters in weeks, but for some reason I decided to tonight. This was one news item of interest:

Chicken N' Beer
Like chicken wings? Like “beer”? Then join CRL in the Burrow tomorrow, Oct. 20, at 8 p.m. for free chicken wings, a root beer keg and the movie "Leaving Las Vegas." This event is sponsored by CRL as part of Alcohol Awareness Week. Contact CookSM@hendrix.edu with any questions.

I don't know why, but that whole idea for an event sort of irritates me. I have an idea for an alternative program. This is what the PSA should have done with itself:

Tofu N' Hard Liquor
Like drinking? Like bean curd, and not supporting corporate agribusiness? Then join [insert group name] in the Burrow tomorrow for free, organic vegan food, tons of cheap alcohol, and the movie "Easy Rider". True, "Easy Rider" has little to do with either alcohol or the meat industry, but we feel that it's better to show a really good movie about unrelated yet complex issues than it is to show a fair-to-middling movie that's linked to the topic of discussion in only the most shallow of ways. Instead, let's get raging drunk, have outlandish and poorly informed arguments about animal welfare and environmentalism, and end up making out in the corner like Peter Fonda and that prostitute in the New Orleans cemetary. This event is sponsored by [insert group name] as part of Tyson Chicken's Numerous Labor Violations Awareness Week. Contact benji.hardy@gmail with any questions.

And thank you, Jenny, for making me watch Easy Rider this summer. Thank you, and please email me.
