The Upanishads Review

I had ordered a copy of  "The Upanishads" by Eknath Easwaran, after reading some rave reviews of it in the blog of a voracious reader. I am not disappointed, it is indeed one of the most profound texts I have ever  come accross. I have made attempts to delve into spiritual books quite often and couldn't really get a clear picture of the ubiquitous "Self" which is a recurrent theme in all these books. I still don't , but atleast this book explains it much more lucidly and reaffirms that, one can't understand the self in words. The only way to know it is to meditate. Eknath explains further, just as there are 3 states of consciousness that most people are aware of, the wakeful state, the dreamy sleep state and the dreamless sleep state, there is a fourth state of waking up to the dreamless consciousness, the Upanishads state with authorithy, attainable through meditation.  Just as the dream is real untill one wakes up to the reality of life, one can wake up to this higher level of consciousness and life would be as real as the dream was when you were dreaming. I am eager to see what that feels like, they say the joy is profound more than a 100 times a healthy, succesful man with all the earth has to offer has.

Among other things I had a serious food poisoning episode. Thanks to help from Bhikari and Mota, I recovered fast. Fever of 105F drained the life out of my senses, all I could do for 24 hours is lie down, let my senses shut up and dream of travelling through a bright light filled triangular tunnel, narrowing on me as I travel colliding with it's edges. There was so little energy left, that the mind couldn't even dream properly. Appraisals are over and boss gave me shitloads in the discussion justifying my rating. I had no option but to listen and nod. Otherwise, things are fine as they always are.
