I agree that is a powerful scene! I don't really like when either of the boys are jerks nor when John is a total jerk though :/ it just doesn't sit well with me

I agree with you if they do it intentionally.
The thing is, John doesn't mean to be... mean. He just has high expectations of his son, and demands results - like he usually does.
Think of it like John is with Sam, only it's a reverse world where Sam's way of looking at the world (i.e - school's what's important) and Dean's technical skills aren't since his grades suck.
It's a story about how high expectations can crush some people.
Oh, and Sam's being a younger brother - picking on his older brotehr is his birthright ;)

Oh I meant intentionally.

I can "stomach" it if it's done for a reason, like what you said, but the author needs to explain to me why it's been done or if the POV is teen!Sam, then I can understand but I like for glimpses of Dad!John to show through you know?

Agreed.
Although, I don't think it has to be from another POV. Sometimes having another character speak up is enough to start up a conversation that explains the characters's motives.

yep, I totally agree! I WISH that the writers of Supernatural would get that though. There isn't enough of that type of conversations to satisfy me.

Urgh.
You know the situation is really bad when an actor gives up on a character.
In an interview, JDM said that it's not that his schedual is full, it's that no one's asked him to come back.
When asked if he would, he said he's heard what they did with John's character and that it's too far from where he'd wanted to take it.
So canon-wise, John's a jerk.
Then again, I reject that canon and substitute it with my own... ;)
