Grace’s human form has the distinct appearance of someone who is absolutely gorgeous but doesn’t care at all about her appearance or maintaining it. She’s got short, unkempt and yet very curly, bright red hair and vibrant green eyes. Eywa was kind to her at this point, or whatever brought her to Paixao was, returning her clothes as she arrived. She normally wears a pair of tan pants, shoes she can walk around the base in, but not of the hiking variety. She’s a scientist, not a trigger-happy moron, and besides that, hiking boots wouldn’t fit inside the mind-link machines. Her shirt is a green v-neck that complements her eyes, with a white camisole under it. And over all that, she wears a scientist’s lab coat. Here in Paixao, she’ll wear similar things. Around her neck is a tan necklace, similar to the tribal Na’vi ones. It’s a small comfort in a strange world.
Her Avatar form is quite different. Standing at nine feet tall, Grace’s Avatar has bright blue skin that nearly glows, oval-shaped ears that sit a little further up her head than human ears, bright yellow eyes, and other feline qualities, such as a long tail and very good maneuverability. Her long black hair is pulled back in a low pony-tail with two small chunks hanging on either side of her face and several beads on the end of each strand. At the end of the ponytail is the equivalent of a neuro-network connector, which basically looks like several peach-colored tentacle-like feelers that retract inside the ponytail’s end at will. Being an Avatar, which is made from the DNA of a Na’vi and a human (who will be its driver - in this case it’s Grace), this form tends to look like a cross between a human and a Na’vi. It has most of the qualities of a Na’vi in order to fit in with the natives better, but it also looks a little bit like the human driver, particularly in the facial structure. The difference with Grace’s is that hers was made roughly 20 years ago, so it looks quite a bit younger than her human form does now. It would be a little difficult to piece together that they are the same person, especially if the person examining her doesn’t know about the Avatar program. Regardless, Grace’s Avatar would be recognizable in that “do you have a sister?” way.
Unlike the Na’vi, Grace isn’t comfortable wearing as little as they do. She instead wears things that are more suited to human comfort, like the maroon-colored tank top, khaki shorts, and thick hiking boots. Around her neck is another tribal sort of necklace, though this one is thinner, darker, and ends in a large circle pendant.
Personality
Grace shows two different personalities depending on which body she’s currently inhabiting.
In her human form, she is very forward, loud, and strong. Mostly this is due to the fact that she’s the leader of the Avatar Program and so she has to show that she knows what she’s doing at all times, which of course she does. She also has to deal with the military morons, whom she wastes no love on. She’s driven and a bit of an idealist, as well. Grace is not afraid to speak her mind and does so with gusto, talking over people as it suits her needs. Her dedication to botany and the Avatar Program is intense and she confronts the heads of excavation and military several times because they are ruining her attempts to understand the Na’vi and establish peaceful connections with them. It’s easy to slide her into the slot of “crazy scientist,” but though she loves plants and her work, she is still human. Grace still truly cares about life, all life, and this manifests itself in her vibrant protests against what Parker and Quaritch attempt to do to the Na’vi later on in the movie. She’s also known for swearing fluently and often, and smoking, though she only really needs a cigarette when she comes out of a mind link, presumably for a calming effect. However, not all of Grace is loud and “in-your-face.” She has a softer, more motherly side to her, which is shown once Jake is accepted into the Na’vi clan. Grace spends time quizzing him on the Na’vi people, names, habits, and anything else that would help him. She encouraged him, in a roundabout way, and once, when he fell asleep making a video log, she managed to wheel him back to his bed alone and lifted him up into it so he would be comfortable as he slept.
Since Grace was working hard to make peaceful relations with the Na’vi of Pandora, she’s much less abrasive in her Avatar form. Her motherly qualities are much more apparent, as well, and she’s kind, gentle, and patient, lending her to be a very good teacher and mentor when she needs to be. However, this doesn’t mean she can’t or won’t be forceful when she has to. She just chooses not to normally. When she’s shocked enough, though, she will still swear, as she proved when she heard that Jake and Neytiri had mated in front of Eywa. One single word was spoken: “Shit.” And that embodied everything she was feeling at the time.
abilities/ strengths/weaknesses
Abilities/Weaponry/Strengths: Grace is mentally and emotionally a very strong person. While she does anger easily, she doesn’t break easily and will fight back when someone threatens a project or someone important to her. She is also incredibly smart, capable of handling the vast knowledge required of scientists as well as those who go through doctorate programs and Avatar training. Physically, her human form isn’t very strong, but she’s not weak either. She can fight back enough to be a slight threat, though she’s easily overpowered by military personnel when she’s detained for treason. She doesn’t carry weapons as a human, preferring not to sink to the levels the military seems to favor. Grace is also bilingual, able to speak both English and the native Na’vi language fluently. Mentally, she has to be strong as well in order to maintain the mind link between her human and Avatar bodies.
As for her Avatar, being nine-feet tall with a different biological make-up has its perks. For one thing, she’s stronger than she is as a human. Again, she does not carry weapons, mostly because that’s the damn military’s job and she’s pissed off enough at them for ruining her attempts at making peaceful relations with the Na’vi. However, if she were to go rampaging through the city, chances are she could do some damage. The Avatar body is strong in comparison to the majority of Paixao’s normal human populace. Not that Grace would do that. The Avatar body is too valuable to her. The Na’vi also have many feline qualities, such as abnormal agility, which serves them quite well in their tree-homes.
Weaknesses: Grace’s biggest weakness is her love of science, plants, and the Na’vi. She is quick to anger and can come off as a bit of a bitch, lending her to not having many friends. However, Grace would do anything for the Na’vi, even defecting from the RDA and the Program as a whole when things started turning against the Na’vi. She doesn’t hide her feelings, preferring for people to know exactly what she’s feeling and why, and will make sure everyone knows it.
Physically, her human form isn’t very strong, but she’s not weak either. She can fight back enough to be a slight threat, though she’s easily overpowered by military personnel when she’s detained for treason. She’s also known for liking cigarettes, and though she doesn’t smoke many, she does need one after she comes out of mind link more often than not and may become extremely agitated if she doesn’t get one. Her Avatar form, being so large, has the potential to be easily tripped or otherwise tied up should anyone get the idea, but this is normally not an issue because of the catlike agility and exceptional climbing ability the Na’vi have.
Mentally, Grace has no barriers, though she doesn’t break very easily. The only real weakness would be the mental link she has with her Avatar body. Paixao messes with it. Paixao messes with it hard. The mind link will periodically, and very sporadically, terminate for absolutely no reason at all, leaving Grace disoriented in her human body and often physically ill as a result. When this happens, her Avatar body will fall lifelessly to the ground, no matter where it is, and cannot be revived until the mind link is re-established. Sometimes Grace can manage a second connection very rapidly, but sometimes that isn’t possible, a discovery that will be very nerve wracking for her.
history
Not much is known about Grace’s history before the movie’s beginning. Most, if not all of it is complete conjecture and a good educated guess. She would have had to earn top marks to go into her chosen field of botany, so her grades throughout school would have been excellent. One could also assume she was always interested in plants and that would be one reason she went into this field. A good chunk of her life after high school would have been dedicated to studying botany and finishing up her higher education. Undergraduate, Masters, and Doctorate degrees were earned, as she is known as Dr. Grace Augustine. At some point during or after all of this, she would have learned about the new Avatar program and the study being conducted on the distant moon called Pandora. As someone who loves to work with plants, Grace would have jumped at the chance to go somewhere completely new to look at the flora. The trip to Pandora itself was a 6-year flight through space, though she was kept in cyro-sleep, a type of frozen hibernation, for the entire time. During this time, her Avatar, one of only 20 known Avatars at the start of the movie, was developed.
Once she arrived on Pandora, Grace took to her Avatar form and her job easily and willingly. She became head of the Avatar Program and the most respected scientist at Hell’s Gate, the human-inhabited base on Pandora. She quickly became the stuff of legends, going so far as to catalogue all the species of plants on Pandora and writing a book on the subject. Her knowledge is extensive. She also opened a school to teach the Na’vi English and human culture, which she operated until Miles Quaritch and his “trigger-happy morons” in the military insulted and injured the Omaticaya clan so that they refused entrance to all who were “Dreamwalkers,” the name they gave the Avatars. As Grace had truly enjoyed being a teacher of the Na’vi and respected the indigenous people of Pandora, she was thoroughly put out and angered by this sudden development. So she was reduced to studying the plants a bit more, which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing for her; it was just frustrating when she had spent so long gaining the trust of the Na’vi people.
Some time later, Jake’s brother was killed and Jake took his place in the Avatar Program. Upon learning that the scientist she’d been expecting had been replaced by yet another trigger-happy marine moron, Grace did not hesitate to show her anger at what she felt was a direct insult to the program and an attempt for the military to take over. However, she had no choice but to train Jake anyway, as his brother’s Avatar would go to waste otherwise and the Avatars were too expensive to just throw away. Instead of offering him any useful job, she appointed him to guard duty while she instructed Norm, who had arrived with Jake, regarding how to take samples as a 9-foot-tall Avatar. In a freak encounter with the native wildlife, Jake got himself separated from Grace and Norm, who managed to make it back to their transportation. Not wanting to lose a valuable Avatar and driver, Grace appointed the pilot, Trudy, to fly around in a search for Jake, but ultimately they had to turn back as night was falling. Grace was sure Jake would not survive the night.
Later on, Jake wakes up, the human Jake, much to Grace’s relief, though that quickly turns to shock mixed with jealousy when she hears that the Omaticaya accepted him into the clan. However, this change creates a difference in the way she treats Jake from then on, and she’s much kinder to him for it. Because he’s allowed into Hometree, Grace is as well, which makes her extremely happy. The first time she returns, she’s greeted very warmly by the Na’vi who knew her.
Three months pass by very rapidly and finally Quaritch gets antsy, giving Jake and Grace one last chance to get the Omaticaya people to move away from Hometree. The two go to talk to the Na’vi and warn them that the military is coming to destroy Hometree and will kill them all without hesitation. In doing so, Jake must explain why he’s there on Pandora and he and Grace are branded as enemies of the Omaticaya and bound. Not long after, Mo’at, female shaman of the tribe, rescues them, begging them to help the Na’vi, which they attempt to do as best they can. Unfortunately, they’re interrupted, as Quaritch forcefully breaks their mindlinks, causing their Avatars to fall lifelessly to the ground. Jake’s is left by the ashes of Hometree, but in a sign of just what Grace meant to the Omaticaya, they carry her Avatar body with them to the Tree of Souls.
Back in Hell’s Gate, Grace, Norm, and Jake protest the military’s treatment of the Na’vi and the destruction of the delicate ecosystem, and are imprisoned as a result. Thinking that their options are completely wiped out now, they’re all surprised to find Trudy and Max rescuing them while the rest of the base isn’t looking. Unfortunately, just as they’re getting into the Samson, Quaritch discovers them and lays into them with a powerful machine gun. Trudy turns the Samson at just the wrong time, giving Quaritch a clear shot at Grace, and he deals her what is canonly a fatal stomach wound.
The group makes it out anyway, managing to grab one of the mind link pods on the way and take it up to the Hallelujah Mountains so that Jake can use his Avatar form to beg the Omaticaya to help Grace. It takes him some time, but eventually he manages it. Coming back for Grace’s human body, he carries her to the Tree of Souls so that the Na’vi can pray to Eywa, their goddess, in the hope that she will transfer Grace’s consciousness permanently to her Avatar body. In the middle of the ritual, Grace’s consciousness starts to slide away and she can see Eywa, learning that this goddess is real, the very life system of Pandora itself. A moment later, her consciousness begins to slip away into the ecological database that forms the neuro-network Pandora is comprised of and operates on. She’s in a state of limbo when she’s pulled to Paixao, split between her human body, Eywa, and her Avatar. Hence, both Avatar and human form are pulled through, bound by her consciousness’ link to the Pandoran database, though she wakes up in her Avatar body, since her consciousness had just left her human body. Which is probably good, as she’s literally on death’s door anyway.
