Wish I could find the rest of the interview somewhere but really I cannot see how he can dig himself out of that ghastly, sordid little pit he just dug. He didn't just say it once, oh no! People who don't believe in God are less than human! The arrogance of the smarmy git! Why oh sodding why do we have to give these twisted up little trolls all ( Read more... )

Took me two watches to get that but it was a nice way to defuse the rage. In our family it wouldn't be oranges though. Satsumas maybe, but probably little sushi rolls :)

Wow. That's...no. As a Christian, I have to say a big, fat NO to that.

Knowing you is very good for me. Every time I am tempted to really go off on one on my LJ in response to something like this it is the knowledge that you might read what I say and be hurt by my inclusion of you in any blanket condemnations I might feel like making at the time that makes me more careful about what I say and how I phrase it. There is nothing like having an individual, human face - or in your case a whole person - to put on a category of people to remind one that they are people and not some sort of gestalt 'Other' entity.

Yes, I wonder how many of these less-than-human people this Cardinal guy actually knows personally?

The only slightly less outrageous and less obnoxious interpretation which I've seen is that by 'less than fully human' he means 'are not completely fulfilling our human potential'.

I am assuming that he is not being entirely literal, otherwise he would be a heretic. Human subspecies defined by thought alone? Not entirely in line with 'in his image' kind of creation, let alone evolution which the Vatican does still sorta kinda accept. However how he says what he says is deeply revealing.
