Weigh-hey!

Sep 26, 2008 10:34

Weighed in this morning and realized that, as Mr wol complained last week, that I can only read the new scales when it is a big number. New scales and old scales disagree too which be a bugger. Will have to get Mr Wol to check my figures but I think I have lost another 3 pounds but maybe only 2. In a Cafe Paradiso week and an otherwise not terribly self denying week and, vitally, a menstrual week I am rather pleased with that. Yo ho!

have been using the online Radio 4 again and discovered that the Saturday serial is Apsley Cherry Garrard's The Worst Journey in the World written by a man who was on the last Scott expedition. I have had this book for years - inspired by Kim Stanley Robinson's Antarctica but balked at the hugeness of it. Having heard last week's except I have dug it out again. It is beautifully written and really brings you into the heart of the experience. However as it is the worst journey in the world then that experience is not a vast boatload of fun. Scott is not a hero of mine at all but I am a strong admirer of several of the men who followed him so he must have had something. Cherry-Garrard's story does not have the astonishing doggedness of Tom Crean's or the selfless inspiration of Birdie Bowers's but rather he comes across as something of an Everyman figure - someone who has no particular aptitude for the place or the endeavor but who simply keeps on trying. Imagine doing the trek to the pole in glasses! let alone the mad trek in the Antarctic winter to the Emperor Penguin nesting grounds. Crazy! So go check out the Radio 4 listen again before it vanishes on Sunday - however any Archers fans out there will have to work hard to see Cherry-Garrard with the voice of a Grundy, young Will Grundy I think.
