birthdays and Christmas: songs and Santa

Happy birthday gillo! A new LJ friend to me but a fun one.

Today was DD's Xmas concert. It was exactly the sort of fiasco that makes one feel that it is really nearly Xmas. Fun was had by all and the parents clapped like fools. The Montessori kids were dressed up as snowmen (which involved more black bin-liners than you would think) and were astonishingly cute! My folks were in town for a hospital check up for Dad and so came along too. Much hilarity ensued and DD was very honoured that they had made it all that way. I felt very lucky that the show was as shambolic as it was because that meant that they were late enough starting for me to see DD do her spot in spite of teaching until 3.45 the other side of Cork. The whole thing reminded me forcibly of Joyce Grenfell, especially when a bunch of the wilder kids started to go 'Gallopy Gallopy' round the stage and refused to be bundled into a rough line to sing their songs. Then we queued for 90 goddamn minutes to see Santa in the creche. DD was a star all through and displayed more patience than her parents who were clock-watching and imagining the rush hour traffic (to which we are rather allergic) thickening like concrete all the while (actually by the time we left it was well past its worst).

The KidLit people did a fabulous series of presentations on Enid Blyton today, including some cool YouTube parodies (The Famous Five doing 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' took some beating). In fact they made me feel astonishingly guilty for disliking the woman so much. I guess that that was a good sign.
