Separated-Chapter 2

Dean waited helplessly with John who paced impatiently back and forth. He didn’t dare look into his eyes. His father kept a tight grip on his wrist. Dean’s body still trembled. He hated that look he got in his father’s eyes when he mentioned that Sammy was missing. Anger at first, but that such fierce disappointment.

Instantly John had called Bobby since both knew they couldn’t call the police. As they waited by the Impala Dean kept eyeing the mall, praying to see Sammy walking by soon. He watched John breathe a sigh of relief as Bobby pulled up in a pickup truck. Bobby barely parked the car before cutting out.

“Well let’s get started,” Bobby said rather gruffly. He stared at John. “I’m sure Sam’s somewhere around here, John. This is a big mall, an easy place to get lost in.”

“Especially when you don’t have someone to keep an eye on you,” John commented while staring at Dean. Dean instantly lowered his gaze.

“John,” Bobby admonished but John interrupted him.

“Let’s go, before …before…”His body was shook as he spoke and Bobby quickly nodded.

“Dean, get in the car,” John snapped.

“Can’t I come with you?” Dean begged.

“No, you’ll only slow us down. We should have been searching for Sam already. You’ve caused enough trouble for one day. I need you to stay in the car, now.”

Dean knew better than to argue. Trying to fight back the sniffles he climbed into the car.

“If Sammy comes here, don’t let him out of your sight,” John told him and slowly Dean nodded He wanted to say I’m sorry but couldn’t form the words.

John walked briskly into the mall with Bobby. Bobby noticed the man’s entire body was shaking.

“John, relax. We’ll find him.” His voice was soft as he spoke. John swallowed and shook his head.

“I …I can’t lose my children, Bobby…Not after Mary, I just can’t.”

“You won’t.” Bobby’s voice was firm. “Now let’s go find Sam.”

John nodded as he collected himself.

The search continued. The first places they went to was back to Burger King and then to the toy store. They searched every inch, in every corner. Every place they thought that a small child would be. John’s mouth got drier and drier and his breathing become more and more difficult.

Dazed he turned to Bobby.

“Bobby….what if…what if we don’t find him?”

“We’ll find them,” Bobby corrected him sharply. “We’ll find him, John.”

“But if we don’t…I don’t know if he’s hurt or not, if he’s even-“

“Don’t say it,” Bobby warned.

John nodded slowly. He closed his eyes, trying to focus again. He couldn’t afford to lose it again.
