Summary:  Jensen is one of the last descendants of an ancient lineage of werewolf.  There are only a small amount of these creatures left and rare as they are, they can only mate with others of their kind, a spirit made just for them. Jensen's been searching for over a century for his one soul mate.  With no spirit in sight, will he finally succumb to loneliness?

Notes: Drawn and written for alienat and her awesome prompt 'J2 as werewolves, anything goes.'  I also took in some of your likes, the obvious being werewolves (I like them too), alpha/omega dynamics, happy endings, soul bonding, and mates for life.  I also saw that you liked dogs, but I hope wolf pups will suffice J I wasn't planning on writing anything (as I am not very good at it), but I started writing a small summary for the art, and it just kept on going and going.  It's more of a small moment in time, but I hope you'll like it

Merry Christmas, my dear, and have a Happy Holiday!

Jensen is one of the last descendants of an ancient lineage of werewolf, or Alpha, one who's able to shift from human, human-wolf hybrid, and full wolf form, no matter the moon's phases. There are only a handful of these magnificent creatures left, as they can only mate with one of their kind, specifically those of an equal ancient lineage, known as Alpha Spirits.  Although alphas are capable of living for centuries, so many die young of a lonely heart, unable to find their one true mate, the spirit that completes the wolf.

These spirits are only part wolf, with heightened senses, faster reflexes, and faster healing capabilities than the average human.  They are only capable of shifting a fraction of what the Alpha can, and only do so when they scent their mate.

These werewolves can only mate with one spirit, as they are the only ones who can bond with the werewolf and are able to handle the wolf.  Each pair is made only for each other.  Jensen's been searching for his spirit for 114 years.  With Jensen no closer to finding 'the one' as he was 30 years ago, Jensen begins losing faith and his lonely heart slowly disintegrates. Until one night he catches the scent of rain.

Rain always soothed and comforted the young werewolf (a century is quite young for these wolves) so he'd welcome the change in dry weather.  Shifting his head to the west, he searches the sky for grey clouds in the approaching storm. But the moon is high and the stars are visible.  That's strange.  There's not a single cloud in the sky and it hasn't even rained for several days.

Wondering what else produces this --tender-- scent, Jensen decided to follow it's lead. Several miles later, and into a small clearing in the forest, Jensen spots a figure, no…a boy, lying on his back; coltish arms folded behind his head and long legs spread out in the tall grass.  He can barely make it out, but the boy's eyes are closed, as if asleep.  Jensen stays at the edge of the clearing to watch this enchanting sight, mesmerized by this peaceful boy.  Minutes pass, and a breeze gently rustles the grass.  Awoken, the boy begins to laugh.

"That tickles," Jensen hears, voice so soft.  The boy, giggling now, sits up, stretches, and leans back on his hands. He tilts his head back, letting his dark floppy hair fall away from his glowing face, illuminated by the moon high in the sky.

Jensen's so caught up in the sight of the boy, that he's moved out of the tree line and into the clearing, standing a mere foot away from the boy.  The boy calls to him.  Jensen inhales a quick breath.  Startled, the boy opens his eyes and locks on to Jensen's.

It's in that moment Jensen knows he's finally found his one spirit.

Jared's always loved the outdoors.  Every chance he gets he's out in the forest, picking up strange bugs to show his mother, and sketching the wildlife passing in between the trees.  But one thing he enjoys the most is spending time in the forest, especially after it rains.  The scent and the soothing sound of rain dampening the forest floor, inviting him to join them.  The peaceful, almost surreal atmosphere the forest creates after it rains, with the mist clinging to the leaves, the quietness of the trees, as if it was a sign of worship, was Jared's 'me time.'  It always calmed him on the inside, giving him a sense of feeling complete…well, almost complete.

Jared is proud of his life.  He has everything he needs; parents who love and support him, siblings who pester him, a wonderful home, good grades, and the forest.  But deep down, Jared's always known something was missing in his life, something that made him feel…empty.  He's constantly surrounded by family and friends who he loves dearly, hell, even the trees are his buddies, but that never seems to be enough to rid himself of this truly lonely feeling.   Jared has no idea what (or who, for that matter) can come to his rescue and fill the emptiness in his heart, to make him finally feel whole.

Jared can see the brilliant Milky Way in the small clearing he had found exploring the forest a few years ago.  This is his favorite spot to sit and watch the stars.  It's been a while since he's been out here, all thanks to high school.  It hasn't rained here either since last week, but he needed a break anyways…in the middle of the night.

The empty ache in his chest was bothering him, more so than usual, all evening and he couldn't fall asleep.  He felt the forest calling him to visit, and well, he just couldn't resist. Jared made it to the clearing wearing his pj's and a light grey hoodie that was wearing thin in some spots and smelled moldy.  His mother keeps pestering him to toss that 'awful smelly menace' away. He's been everywhere with that hoodie.  It's got permanent grass stains in it; blue ink stains too, from the amount of pens he carries around so he won't miss any opportunity to sketch.  He's even left that hoodie behind in the forest many times and he only remembers it when, of course, it rains. But gosh darnit, it's the most comfortable thing he's ever worn.  It ain't goin' anywhere.

It's a rather warm night so Jared takes the hoodie off, lies back in the tall grass, and eventually dozes off.  Jared always looses a sense of time when he's in the forest, so when the breeze passes through the clearing, Jared shivers and laughs when the grass starts brushing against his bare arms, almost like fingers whispering for him to wake up.

"Stop it, that tickles," Jared pushes up on his hands and stretches, wincing when his back pops.  He sighs in relief, stretching making everything better.  With a smile on his face, he leans back on his hands and tilts his face toward the sky.  The moon shines overhead into the clearing, illuminating the sleeping trees and shining brightly on the forest floor.  His smile widens and Jared closes his eyes, basking in the warm glow.

That's when he hears someone gasp in front of him.  Startled, Jared opens his eyes and finds himself staring into the most beautiful gold green eyes he's ever seen.

At that moment Jared knew he had found what he was missing, the emptiness in his heart is finally filled.

****A few years later****

"How do I smell?" Jared asks, breaking the silence.  Jared and Jensen lay in the clearing, cuddled next to each other for warmth.  Well, Jared is cuddling, Jensen's just the furnace that provides the heat.  Winter is fast approaching, and Jared loves it out here under the stars, even though he hates feeling cold.  Jensen had brought out thick blankets to snuggle under while they gazed upon the night sky.

"With your nose, my lovely." Jared is using his arm as a pillow and Jensen can't help but smile every time he gazes upon his mate.  What a sap he's become.  But hey, 114 years with no Jared in his life, yeah, he's gonna soak up all the warm and fuzzy feelings every single chance he gets.

Jared shifts at his side and the hoodie he is so fond of keeping, rides up, exposing a sliver of his perfect swelling stomach.  Yes, Jared's pregnant with their first pup.  Jensen gently slides his hand under the soft fabric and cups his belly.  He listens for the small reassuring heartbeat.  The pup is due in a month's time and Jared can't wait, reveling in a sensation so few of his kind ever get the chance to experience.

Jared's hearty laugh rings in the air as he smacks Jensen on the stomach.  "No!  You know that's not what I meant ya big furball."  Jared rolls over onto his side, careful of his stomach, and peers down at Jensen, goofy grin on his face.  "What I meant was, what's my scent smell like to you? What makes me smell like me?"

Jensen's never really thought about it before.  Whenever he scents Jared he just thinks 'Jared, Jared, Jared.'  But he knows what he's asking for and tries to find something to compare it to.

Jensen gives it a shot.  "You smell like… the forest, like the grass.  Also like…a mist, almost." Jensen recalls the first time he caught Jared's scent. "…Like. You know when it rains, the day after?" Jared nods.  "Well, there's this smell that lingers after it rains and it just smells earthy and clean, almost like the forest got in a good bath.  That's what you smell like, the scent of rain."

Jared ponders the idea for a moment.  Based on the very thoughtful look screwing up Jared's face, Jensen wonders if he needs to come up with another description.  Just as Jensen's about to open his mouth, Jared mumbles one word.

"Petrichor."

"What?"  Jensen's dumbfounded.  Jared's spitting out scientific terms again.  You’d think that after years of traveling around, he'd have at least heard of all these vocabulary words by now.  Ha ha, nope!

"Petrichor," Jared says again. "It's the scent of rain…or the smell released by plants and dirt after it rains." Jared grins and lays his head back onto Jensen's shoulder.  "I love that smell."

Jensen repeats the word he just learned.  He looks down into Jared's hazel eyes and smiles.

"Yeah."  He leans down to kiss his mate. "I love it too."
