Summary: My response to the prompt "Tragedy"--Jack discovers the true meaning of the word
Jack had heard the word tragedy tossed in his direction a fair number of times in his life: by his mum, who seemed to think that every mischief he found himself in was tragedy; by Beckett, who muttered in measured words that his fall from grace was a tragedy, mere moments before Jack found himself scarred and in agony. Hurricanes, curses, deaths-tragedies all, and all part and parcel of Jack’s haphazard way of life.
But it was not until that fateful day on the Dutchman, as he found himself holding life and death in the palm of his hand, that he realized the full weight of the word. He watched the fire fade from young Turner’s eyes, heard Elizabeth's desperate sobs. In that moment, he saw the great tragedy played out before him, Fate more cunning and cruel than any actor on a stage.
