Embarassing Recommendations and Freezing to Death

Feb 05, 2007 07:22

This is the recommendation one of my professors gave me for grad school. I couldn't believe it! It was actually quite embarassing, and he made me read it, even though I didn't really want to. So I'm going to make you read it too.

I have been asked by Anne Frazer to write a letter of recommendation in support of her application to your program leading to the Postgraduate Diploma/MA in Irish History and Politics. I am very happy and enthusiastic about doing so because I believe that she has the intelligence, character, and commitment to succeed in a rigorous program of advanced studies. Indeed, I would have to rank her among the top one per cent of all the students I have taught at Indiana University Southeast.

I first met Anne several years ago when she was a student in some of my upper division courses in our political science program. Right from the start I was impressed with the quality of her academic work. Her performane in constitutional law and political theory was especially notweorthy. She was always prepared for class discussions, and her comments and questions were always "on point." Moreover, her written work was a model of clarity and precision. Also, she was regarded by her peers as a class leader, and was seen as someone whose assistance could be sought to master the course material. She freely gave her time, and was well liked by her colleagues and instructors. Indeed, had her schedule permitted, I would have employed her as a Supplemental Instructor (SI) for my introductory course in political theory (the SI program at IUS is designed to assist undegraduates in introductory courses by providing additional discussion sessions led by a senior student who had previously excelled in the course).

Anne also took advantage of extracurricular opportunities to expand her educational horizon. She was one of two students selected last year by the political science department to take part in our Washington DC travel seminar. Moreover, she availed herself of various overseas study programs to deepen her understanding of Irish history and culture.

In summary, I can recommend Anne Frazer to you without qualification. She is an extraordinary student with a bright academic future. If given the opportunity, I know that she will excel in your program, and I am confident that you will come to share my high regard for her ability, commitment, and character. She will be a credit to your program.

In other matters, it is SOOOOO cold here today. It's like...five or something. The schools have a 2 hour delay so that little kids don't have to stand outside when it's so cold...

God, I wish it were spring..
